Bixal is looking for an inspired leader to continue to grow and evolve its industry-leading human-centered design team.

As the head of HCD at Bixal, your job is to build teams and develop systems and processes to enable high-performance design work that delivers meaningful results. This includes improving the efficiency and quality of planning and execution of design activities across projects; fostering an environment where designers and researchers are motivated, challenged, and happy about coming to work; and increasing the visibility of Bixal within the professional community, leading to more industry collaboration and business opportunities.

You are:  

A design thinker. Ensure that everything Bixal does has a real purpose behind it and is focused on the right problem for the right person.

A trend spotter. Responsible for building networks of people, organizations, technologies, and ideas to ensure Bixal is constantly evolving and finding opportunities to make a difference, grow and lead.

A leader. Passionate about leading a team of people, not resources.

A thought leader. Position Bixal as an HCD leader in the Federal space.

Digitally minded. Build a culture of all things digital to help Bixal’s clients achieve their digital transformation in a way digital is embedded in all aspects of the work we do rather than an afterthought.

A spokesperson and bridge builder. Ability to show sensitivity and to establish respect, credibility and trust in government and non-government settings and with a reputation for opening doors and building relationships.



  • Establish a vision. create and share a narrative and artifacts that make strategy concrete and provides a “north star” inspiration for the HCD org and Bixal as a whole, with a focus on spurring action.
  • Bring a human-centered-design-informed perspective to company-wide issues, including strategic planning and business outcomes.
  • Represent and advocate for HCD throughout the company, including articulating the benefits and what is needed to be effective.
  • Work with other company executives on annual planning initiatives, forecasting headcount, and business development activities.


  • Continue to define and evolve design processes and practices.
  • Work together with the senior leadership team to bring new and innovative methodologies to Bixal’s design practice.


  • Build and support a healthy, high-performing, and sustainable team, including overseeing recruiting and hiring processes; career and professional development; team culture development; and designer-friendly day-to-day people management practices.
  • Mentor and coach up and coming leaders on the HCD team.
  • Manage recruitment and hiring of design team members.
  • Manage, grow and cultivate Bixal’s design team – where designers of all types feel challenged with meaningful work, see a clear path for growth and have opportunities for improvement through training and mentorship.
  • Set clear expectations: Articulate for the team about quality of work and for the company about how we work and why it’s important.
  • Remove obstacles: Help the team navigate bureaucratic barriers that can get in the way of producing quality, human-centered design work.
  • Provide constructive feedback: Encourage a culture of seeking frequent feedback in a way that answers questions, builds on what’s been done, and moves work forward.


  • Create and evolve systems and strategies to ensure a focus on the end-to-end customer experience throughout our engagements.
  • Coordinate with company-wide operations personnel to effectively run the HCD organization as it scales, including considerations for people, process, programs, communication, coordination, annual planning, budgets, onboarding, managing partners, and more.
  • Ensure that physical and digital spaces support the collaborative and visual nature of design work.

Thought Leadership:

  • Promote the importance of human-centered design and design thinking throughout the organization and with Bixal’s clients
  • Build on Bixal’s reputation in the Federal design community, and design community at large, to establish Bixal as a thought leader in Human-Centered Design.
  • Cultivate a culture of design on your team and across the organization
