Rust Go Backend Development Security Cryptography Code Review Testing Collaboration Platform Engineering Remote Work

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am excited to apply for the Jr Developer position on the Trust Platforms team at 1Password. With over six months of experience in Rust and Go development, including internships and open-source contributions, I have a strong foundation in building clean, maintainable backend code. I am particularly drawn to 1Password's mission of empowering secure digital productivity and the opportunity to work on innovative technologies like confidential computing and public key verification.

In my previous experience, I have demonstrated a passion for problem-solving and collaboration, working effectively with senior developers to break down complex tasks and ensure high-quality code through testing and code reviews. I am eager to contribute to 1Password's growth and learn from a team of strong mentors while helping shape a safer digital future.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how my skills align with the needs of your team.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

Can you describe a time when you had to debug a complex issue in a Rust or Go codebase? What steps did you take?
In a previous internship, I encountered a race condition in a Go service that caused intermittent failures. I started by reproducing the issue in a controlled environment, then added logging and used the Go race detector to identify the problematic code. I fixed it by adding a mutex to protect shared state and wrote a test to verify the fix.
How do you ensure the code you write is maintainable and scalable?
I follow clean code principles such as meaningful naming, small functions, and proper documentation. I also adhere to design patterns that promote separation of concerns, like using interfaces in Go for dependency injection. For scalability, I consider performance implications early and write modular code that can be easily extended.
Explain your understanding of confidential computing and why it's important for security.
Confidential computing protects data in use by performing computation in a hardware-based Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). This ensures that even the cloud provider cannot access the data. It's important for applications that handle sensitive data, like password managers, because it adds a layer of security beyond encryption at rest and in transit.
How would you approach learning a new technology or tool that is unfamiliar to you?
I start by reading official documentation and tutorials to understand the basics. Then I build a small project to apply my knowledge hands-on. I also look for community resources like forums or open-source code to see best practices. Finally, I seek feedback from more experienced colleagues to deepen my understanding.
Describe a situation where you had to collaborate with a team to solve a difficult problem. What was your role?
During a hackathon, our team had to integrate a third-party API under tight deadlines. My role was to research the API documentation and propose an implementation approach. I communicated my findings clearly and coordinated with teammates to divide tasks. We successfully integrated the API and won the best technical solution award.
