I am writing to express my interest in the Senior Manager, Control Process Automation & Data position at Monzo. With over 8 years of experience in risk management, data transformation, and process automation within the financial services sector, I am excited about the opportunity to drive Monzo's control discipline strategy and support its expansion into new markets.

In my current role at [Current Company], I led the implementation of an automated risk monitoring system that reduced manual assessments by 40% and improved real-time threat detection. I am particularly drawn to Monzo's mission to make money work for everyone and its innovative approach to banking.

My expertise in AI-driven solutions, programme management, and cross-functional collaboration aligns perfectly with the requirements of this role. I am eager to bring my skills to Monzo and help build a scalable, technology-first risk management framework.

Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how I can contribute to Monzo's Control Automation & Data team.

How would you approach building a scalable operating model for a global risk control function?
I would start by assessing the current state, identifying pain points, and defining key capabilities needed for scalability. I would design a modular service model with clear roles, processes, and technology enablers, ensuring alignment with business strategy. I'd prioritize automation and data-driven insights, and establish governance frameworks to manage change across regions.
Describe a time you leveraged AI to improve risk management processes.
In a previous role, I led a proof-of-concept using machine learning to predict operational risk events. We trained models on historical data to identify patterns leading to incidents, and integrated alerts into our risk system. This reduced reaction time by 50% and allowed proactive mitigation. I also built the business case to scale the solution, collaborating with data scientists and engineering.
How do you handle ambiguity when establishing a new team or function?
I embrace ambiguity by setting clear short-term objectives while allowing flexibility in execution. I start with stakeholder mapping to understand expectations, then prioritize quick wins to build credibility. I maintain open communication, iterate based on feedback, and use agile frameworks to adapt as the team's operating rhythm develops.
What metrics would you use to measure the success of a control automation initiative?
Key metrics include reduction in manual control testing effort, time to detect and respond to risks, accuracy of risk assessments, and user adoption rates. I also track cost savings from automation, number of controls automated, and improvement in audit findings. Ultimately, success is measured by enhanced risk coverage and operational efficiency.
How would you prioritize competing demands from different stakeholders in a transformation programme?
I use a structured prioritization framework, such as weighted scoring or MoSCoW, considering factors like business impact, regulatory urgency, and resource availability. I engage stakeholders regularly to align on objectives and manage expectations. I also maintain a transparent roadmap and escalate trade-offs to senior leadership when necessary.

This role sits at the heart of Monzo’s Control Discipline change agenda, supporting the delivery of a future, technology-first, and data-driven risk management model. As Monzo scales into new products and markets, this role will be instrumental in embedding agility, automation, and intelligence into how we manage risks and controls across the business.

⭐ Our Controls team

The role will sit within the Controls organisation, working closely with cross-functional teams across the organisation including Technology, Data and Risk & Compliance. As this is a newly established team, this roleholder needs to bring a flexible and adaptable mindset, as well as a willingness to deal with ambiguity as the team establishes its operating rhythm and embeds itself within the wider business.

🔑 You’ll play a key role in…

  • Leading the Control Discipline data and technology strategy and roadmap, making sure it aligns with Monzo’s expansion plans and Group Risk strategy.
  • Creating a scalable operating model: Working with Risk & Control leads to design and deliver a service model that supports a global organisation.
  • Risk & control data transformation: Partnering with Data and Engineering to translate risk management needs into technology and data requirements to achieve the scaling objectives and help Risk Engineering prioritise needs accordingly to support the transformation agenda.
  • Real-time risk management: Supporting the shift from manual risk assessments to ‘always on’ risk management. This involves working with other risk managers to identify data-driven triggers, designing automated monitoring systems, and creating alerting mechanisms that empower risk owners to act on emerging threats in real-time rather than at a point in time.
  • Platform Evolution: Working with 2nd Line and Technology to evolve our Risk & Control application strategy to deliver simplification, automation and enhanced user value.
  • Innovation and AI: Championing AI in risk management by identifying enterprise partners to build sustainable solutions with Monzo, running PoCs and experiments where necessary, and building business cases to use AI-driven solutions in risk management. Where necessary, leading the contract negotiations and relationship management.
  • Programme Management Office (PMO): Owning the transformation programme roadmap, including any reporting requirements to executives and committees, and keeping stakeholders engaged and consulted throughout the transformation lifecycle.
  • Maintaining a central view of all initiatives, set milestones, identifying possible risks and dependencies, and tracking delivery against milestones.
  • Supporting the ongoing development of our processes, systems and controls to ensure that they are scalable and aligned to our strategy.
  • Managing project schedules, setting milestones, identifying possible issues and clearly communicating them to stakeholders.
  • Technology & Data risk mindset: Instilling a culture of being technology and data led in the Control Discipline, identifying and partnering with culture carriers in the Discipline, to make sure the transformation programme delivers sustainable value.
  • Collaboration, Communication & Leadership: Bringing excellent stakeholder management, building strong partnerships with Risk, Data, Product, Engineering, Procurement, 3rd parties, and Control leads to deliver change.

  • You see the enormous opportunity offered by AI and are comfortable building and writing prompts to solve real control problems
  • You think ‘tech and data’ first and constantly seek ways to improve processes
  • You are hands-on and take satisfaction in supporting colleagues, projects or tasks however big or small – and can take a range of stakeholders on the journey with you
  • You’re excited by what we’re doing at Monzo

ℹ️ This role isn’t for you if…

  • You aren’t comfortable with ambiguity, or thinking from first principles
  • You don’t enjoy working in a fast-paced environment
