Copy Sample interview questionsHow would you design a highly available gRPC-based service for a multicloud PaaS platform?I would begin by defining service contracts, latency and availability objectives, failure modes, and tenant-isolation requirements. The service would run as replicated Kubernetes workloads across failure domains, use health checks and autoscaling, apply timeouts/retries with idempotency safeguards, and expose strong observability through metrics, logs, traces, and SLOs. I would also design for secure service-to-service authentication, controlled rollout mechanisms, and backward-compatible API evolution. Describe a technical tradeoff you would make between delivery speed, reliability, and scalability. I would make the tradeoff explicit using expected customer impact, operational risk, and reversibility. For example, for an urgent feature I might release a narrowly scoped version behind a feature flag with clear SLO monitoring rather than prematurely building every scale optimization. The design must account for each provider's identity model, networking primitives, routing behavior, quotas, API consistency, and failure characteristics while presenting a coherent platform abstraction. I would prioritize least-privilege access, encrypted communication, policy enforcement close to workloads, auditability, and safe reconciliation of desired versus actual state. I would also test provider-specific edge cases and ensure the control plane handles partial failures without creating insecure configurations. How do you balance hands-on technical contribution with people-management responsibilities? I reserve time for the highest-leverage technical work, such as architecture, complex design reviews, incident learning, and critical implementation areas, rather than becoming a bottleneck for routine tasks. We are seeking a hands-on Principal Engineer TL/M – Software Development to join our PaaS team. In this role, you will lead a team of engineers while also contributing to technical execution — defining designs, driving key features, and writing code alongside your team. You will balance engineering leadership with individual technical contributions, owning both people management responsibilities and product components. This is a Tech Lead/Manager (TL/M) role built for a builder who wants to grow as a people leader without leaving the craft behind. Position Responsibilities: * Define and drive next-generation designs for complex distributed systems using Kubernetes and cloud services (AWS, Azure, GCP), contributing directly to code and architecture alongside your team. * Own the end-to-end lifecycle (requirements, design, delivery, and operations) of key features of the PaaS product; break down large projects into executable sub-projects distributed across the team. * Evaluate key engineering tradeoffs and make data-driven technical decisions that balance velocity, quality, and scalability. * Write and present design proposals and technical documents that define complex problems and long-term solutions. * Lead, mentor, and develop a small team of engineers; oversee hiring, career development, and performance management. * Contribute to interviewing and recruiting efforts to attract and retain top engineering talent. * Partner with product management to translate business priorities into a clear technical roadmap and execution plan. * Foster a culture of accountability, technical excellence, diversity, equity, and respect. * Represent the team in cross-functional forums, collaborating across engineering, product, and go-to-market functions.
