I start with production-safe telemetry and query plans to identify expensive scans, poor join strategies, lock contention, and missing or ineffective indexes. I validate improvements with representative data, avoid premature denormalization, consider pagination and batching, and monitor the change after release for regressions in latency or database load. How do you make an event-driven system reliable when events can be duplicated or delivered out of order? I design consumers to be idempotent, include stable event identifiers, and persist processing state where necessary. I also use retries with backoff, dead-letter handling, schema versioning, ordering keys when ordering is required, and dashboards and alerts that make lag, failures, and replay activity visible. Tell us about a project you delivered with limited direction and changing requirements. I would describe how I clarified the customer problem, documented assumptions, proposed milestones, and aligned stakeholders early on key trade-offs. I would show how I used prototypes or incremental releases to reduce uncertainty, communicated risks transparently, and adjusted the implementation while protecting reliability and delivery goals.
