Describe how you design data models for systems that use both relational and non-relational databases. I start with access patterns, consistency requirements, data ownership, lifecycle needs, and operational constraints. I use relational models where transactions, integrity, and complex querying are central, while using non-relational stores when flexible schemas or high-scale access patterns justify the trade-offs. I document boundaries, indexing strategy, migration plans, and data-contract expectations so teams can evolve the system safely. How do you use LLMs or coding agents responsibly in engineering work? I use them to accelerate investigation, generate options, draft tests, review code, and summarize unfamiliar systems, but I keep humans accountable for architecture, security, correctness, and production decisions. I validate outputs through source review, automated tests, observability, and explicit threat or failure-mode analysis. I also turn successful usage patterns into team guidance so AI improves the organization’s baseline rather than producing isolated productivity gains. How do you mentor engineers while still delivering on your own high-impact responsibilities? I embed mentoring in normal engineering work through design reviews, pairing, actionable feedback, and delegation of meaningful ownership rather than only providing ad hoc advice. I clarify desired outcomes and decision boundaries, then support engineers as they develop judgment and confidence. This approach increases team capability while allowing me to remain focused on the cross-team risks and architectural decisions that require staff-level ownership.
