I would immediately perform a focused risk assessment, determine the patient’s exact location and available supports, and activate the appropriate emergency or crisis resources based on the level of risk. I would remain engaged as appropriate, coordinate handoff, document actions carefully, and arrange follow-up care. What helps you maintain empathy and rapport in video-based psychiatric care? I use clear, calm communication, active listening, purposeful pauses, and frequent checks for understanding. I also ensure a professional private environment, explain the telehealth process transparently, and invite patients to participate actively in decisions about their care.
