Senior Database Reliability Engineer

Are you excited to take on a central role architecting and scaling the data layer for our rapidly growing product? We’re looking for a Senior Database Reliability Engineer (DBRE) to join us at Thinkific.

As a Senior Database Reliability Engineer on our engineering team you’ll help manage, operate, and scale our data layer to ensure the ongoing reliability and availability of our data infrastructure. In this role, you’ll uncover performance and reliability insights within our codebases, data model, and infrastructure and provide technical guidance on our data layer technologies to the wider Engineering department. As a senior member of the team, you will inform the future architecture of our product by providing a data-centric perspective on new initiatives.

Your goal will be to provide guidance and best practices on how to design database schemas for scale. Here’s how you’ll accomplish this: 

• Build fault tolerant database infrastructure
• Work on observability of relevant database metrics to help ensure we reach SLOs
• Collaborate with development teams to optimize queries migrate and to roll out changes to the different environments
• Join on-call support rotation with the team

The person we have in mind likely:

• Has 5+ years experience in a DBRE role and extensive knowledge of PostgreSQL database administration and best practices
• Can expertly troubleshoot data layer performance issues
• Has deep knowledge of data layer technologies such as Elasticsearch, Redis, and Kafka
• Knows how to operate data layer technologies on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud
• Possesses an understanding of database observability best practices and tools
• Has experience working in a Linux based, open source ecosystem
• Holds solid skills in a standard scripting language (Python, Bash, Ruby)
• Loves to learn and grow. They’ve found (and keep looking for) ways to level up their skills in this field, whether that’s through formal education, gaining professional experience, or maybe even building their own business

These things would also be nice, but we think you could learn them on the job: 

• Knowledge of event-driven architectures
• Relevant AWS certifications (such as AWS Certified Database – Specialty)
• Software development experience and training
• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tooling such as Terraform
