Sitka is looking for a seasoned professional to join its team to lead its accounting function. This position will be responsible for ensuring Sitka has effective, efficient and ever improving accounting operations. The position will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer and will work closely with other members of the senior team including the CEO, Chief Customer Success Officer, Chief Product Officer and Head of Engineering as well as with the Head of People. The COO will lean on you to help identify and prioritize improvements from a financial operations perspective for the organization and then drive these priorities forward. This role will involve overseeing and monitoring the work of others as well as leading and executing on projects yourself. You must be a people-oriented person, strong collaborator, logical thinker, and have a get the job done mentality. The ideal candidate has years of relevant experience, is an extremely organized tasks master, and is interested in taking on an operational role, using their strong financial acumen, strategic planning and change management experience.

  • Planning, directing and coordinating all accounting operational functions and internal systems, ensuring ongoing improvement in processes
  • Managing the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of consolidated business results
  • Coordinating and preparing internal and external financial statements
  • Coordinating activities of external auditors
  • Providing management with information vital to the decision-making process
  • Managing the budget process
  • Assessing current accounting operations and internal control systems, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of accounting software, as needed
  • Developing and monitoring business performance metrics
  • Overseeing regulatory reporting, frequently including tax planning and compliance
  • Hiring, training and retaining skilled accounting staff
  • Creating deliverables and ensuring follow-up occurs as needed for quarterly Board meetings.
  • Support risk management, ensuring that our business registrations are current, and our insurance coverage appropriately transfers risk in line with business needs
  • Working with the COO to identify improvement opportunities and new initiatives. This will require becoming deeply familiar with Sitka’s business model, KPIs and processes
  • Executing your own set of high-priority improvement projects that have been identified with the COO

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 10+ years proven accounting experience
  • Professional accounting certification, including CPA, CMA, CGA, or CA
  • Working knowledge of finance law and regulatory standards (GAAP)
  • Strong understanding of economic and banking processes
  • Substantial experience leading complex projects with multiple work streams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with a commitment to high-quality output
  • Highly organized, with the ability to work efficiently and effectively
  • Low-ego with the willingness to lead from behind and approaching work with a growth mindset
  • Mission-aligned, self-starter, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Preferred qualifications

  • 5+ years experience as a senior-level accounting or finance manager
  • Strong working knowledge of detailed financial data analysis
  • Proven payroll experience, with a focus on streamlining accounting processes
  • Exemplary history of financial project management
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local tax compliance regulations and reporting requirements
  • CPA highly preferred
