## Description:

I’m looking for the practical reasons investors and founders cite, and how that choice affects runway, fundraising signals, team morale, hiring, and personal finances. When is it reasonable to take a market salary instead of keeping pay minimal? Practical examples or numbers would be helpful. Thanks

Anonymous: Thanks for the clear explanation! That makes a lot of sense—setting a market-level salary helps keep the financials transparent and makes due diligence smoother. Are there any common pitfalls founders should watch out for when determining their initial salary? Report

Brooklyn Hudson [14 Aug 2025](https://jobicy.com/q/1754921219-why-do-founders-often-set-low-initial-salaries#answer-1252.md) Copy answer link Report answerHello, Founders often choose low pay to maximize runway and signal commitment while they unlock product market fit. Practically that can move runway by months if burn is small. Example: a pre seed with $200.000 runway and $30.000 monthly burn can gain ~2.4 months if founders cut $6000 a month each. But at Series A with $200000 monthly burn payroll savings are almost noise. Low salary creates inspiring synergy early on but can also set a precedent that hurts hiring and morale later. Take market pay once revenue is predictable or investor expectations shift. Negotiate a staged salary increase tied to milestones or build a safety net so you can fuel growth without personal collapse. This is a paradigm shift in sustainable leadership.

It's insurance for investors and a personal gamble. There are hidden costs. Too-low salary blows up taxes and retirement contributions. It wrecks visa compliance and can invalidate fair-market appraisals for option pools. Practical rule: pay a survival wage for 12 months, not heroics. Take market pay when the business can hire your replacement at market rate without slicing runway below six to twelve months. Otherwise you sell the company to your landlord.

It’s a trade-off between short-term comfort and long-term upside. This mindset can foster grit, but it risks burnout if the personal financial strain is too high.

From an investor’s perspective, founders taking minimal pay signals skin in the game—like saying “I believe enough to live lean.” But sometimes this becomes performative, masking deeper issues like unclear product-market fit or shaky business models.

A practical nuance: if your startup has strong early revenue or clear traction, moving closer to market salary can boost morale and credibility with hires who want stability. Plus, paying yourself reasonably helps avoid weird tax or legal headaches down the road

Skills audit: financial discipline (budgeting runway), negotiation (investor signaling), and personal finance management (sustaining minimal pay). Example: cutting $5,000/month each in a $150,000 seed round adds 3 months runway. Take market salary when you can afford a replacement or must maintain morale and compliance.

Anonymous [1 Sep 2025](https://jobicy.com/q/1754921219-why-do-founders-often-set-low-initial-salaries#answer-3104.md) Copy answer link Report answerFounders setting low salaries is often a form of yak shaving—clearing the immediate cash flow hurdle to keep the startup alive. But here’s a nuance: if you grok that your role isn’t idempotent—that is, your unique skills can’t be easily replaced—taking too little pay risks undervaluing yourself and burning out early. A quick win? Automate expense tracking to see exactly how salary cuts affect runway in real time, avoiding guesswork. Long-term fix involves building scalable compensation models tied to clear milestones so raising pay doesn’t feel like a shock but an expected step in growth.
