## Description:

I have a US-based job and want to spend several months working from another country — is it possible to do this without creating tax, payroll withholding, or residency obligations for me or my employer? What paperwork, visas, or company approvals typically matter, and how can I avoid unexpected income tax, social security, or corporate nexus problems?

Copy answer link Report answerOne angle people miss is local digital service taxes and VAT. Some countries treat remote work as selling services and will expect a VAT number within days. Also pack a printed employer letter and a notarized copy of your laptop receipt to prove nonresidency. You might also tell your carrier to freeze roaming. Does your company already issue physical letters for travel or do you mean digital approval?

This reduces disruptions and keeps focus on outcomes over hours. From a compliance angle, one often overlooked factor is how long you stay in the foreign country because many tax treaties kick in after 183 days of presence—this can trigger residency or payroll obligations unexpectedly. A practical tip is to use a shared calendar tool where you mark "remote location" days so your employer has clear visibility, helping avoid surprises around work patterns or legal exposure for both sides.

Anonymous [24 Jan 2026](https://jobicy.com/q/1754946336-is-it-possible-to-work-remotely-from-another-country#answer-6125.md) Copy answer link Report answerHow do you ensure remote work abroad doesn't trigger tax or legal liabilities? First, evaluate duration and location to assess tax residency risk (criteria). Gather employer approval, visa status, and local labor laws (evidence). Outcome: clear written consent plus compliance with immigration and payroll rules avoids unexpected obligations. Use a checklist: employer letter, visa type, stay length limits, and consult tax advisors to prevent corporate nexus or social security issues.

We prioritize responses that show practical experience, cite real examples, or demonstrate familiarity with hiring, skills, and job-market trends. Low-quality, duplicate, or AI-generated content that lacks substance is filtered out to maintain accuracy and credibility across the platform.

What makes a high-quality answer

Strong answers include specific steps, industry examples, tools or frameworks, and clear reasoning rather than vague opinions. Answers written by individuals with verified professional backgrounds or direct experience in the field are prioritized.
