Copy answer link Report answerTreat salary talks like a business negotiation, not a friendly chat. Know the market pay for your role within tight 5-10% ranges; vague guesses get you crushed. Back your ask with exact numbers—cutting costs, revenue gains, whatever you did. Don't bluff about other offers unless ready to walk out; I watched a whole team get fired over that stunt once. Praactice saying "I want X" firmly—no wishy-washy phrasing or begging. Expect pushback on every point and stay unemotional; sounding desperate leaks weakess fast in these rooms

Anonymous [3 May 2026](https://jobicy.com/q/1777512519-how-can-i-improve-my-negotiation-skills-for-salary-discussions#answer-7505.md) Copy answer link Report answerThrow out the idea that they want to be your BFF during salary talks. They don’t. Know your worth by stalking what others in your role pull, but add a personal flavor — how you made their code not crash or saved hours on deployment. Play dumb if necessary, ask what the budget looks like instead of just dropping numbers. Confidence isn’t pretending you’re the best; it’s knowing you’ve got options and aren’t desperate for this gig alone. Practice sounding firm without being a jerk – nobody hires a doormat, but they also don’t want an ego trip.

Anonymous [4 May 2026](https://jobicy.com/q/1777512519-how-can-i-improve-my-negotiation-skills-for-salary-discussions#answer-7477.md) Copy answer link Report answerWhen I was gearing up for salary talks in a new tech role, I found it helped to gather solid data first—like checking what similar positions pay on sites like Glassdoor or levels.fyi. I also practiced explaining my impact clearly, focusing on specific projects and results rather than just titles or vague achievements. Role-playing with a friend made me less nervous, since I got used to answering the usual pushback questions without freezing up. It’s weirdly helpful to remind yourself that negotiation isn’t about winning or losing but finding a middle ground where both sides feel okay. So yeah, prepping numbers, practicing talking points aloud, and thinking through possible objections really gave me more confidence going into those chats.

E. R.: Yup, knowing your market rate and being able to show real impact is clutch. Helps you not undersell yourself for sure. And practicing the pitch? Game changer. Just feels less awkward going in prepared like that. ngl I used to freeze up without some solid prep. Report

Research salaries for your exact role and city; use at least 3 sources. Practtice saying “My ask is $X” out loud, no apologies. Role-play tough questions in 10-minute drills. Keep voice steady, pause before answering.

Amelia Gonzalez [19 May 2026](https://jobicy.com/q/1777512519-how-can-i-improve-my-negotiation-skills-for-salary-discussions#answer-7851.md) Copy answer link Report answerStarted prepping for salary talks by listing my recent contributions and quantifying impact—like how I improved a system’s uptime or cut debugging time. Researched typical pay ranges but focused on skills I brought that others might not have. Practiced clear, direct language about expectations without sounding uncertain. Used mock conversations with coworkers to get used to pushback and keeping calm if negotiations stalled. This helped me feel more in control during actual discussions.

State specific wins: ✀Boosted app speed by 30%, savving $X.” Practice a firm “I expect X” instead of “Could I maybe get...” Prep questions about bonus structures or raises later to avoid sounding desperate. Keep calm, don’t bluff about other offers unless you want them to call it out

How we moderate answers

We manually review all contributions to ensure that every answer provides clear, actionable, and professionally relevant guidance. We prioritize responses that show practical experience, cite real examples, or demonstrate familiarity with hiring, skills, and job-market trends. Low-quality, duplicate, or AI-generated content that lacks substance is filtered out to maintain accuracy and credibility across the platform.

What makes a high-quality answer

A high-quality answer offers structured, practical, and experience-based guidance that directly addresses the question. Strong answers include specific steps, industry examples, tools or frameworks, and clear reasoning rather than vague opinions. They avoid emotional language, personal journaling, or lifestyle advice, and instead focus on skills, responsibilities, hiring expectations, resumes, interviews, salary insights, and career transitions. Answers written by individuals with verified professional backgrounds or direct experience in the field are prioritized.

Expert participation rules

Experts participating in Q&A must base their answers on real professional experience, not speculation or generic statements. Contributors are encouraged to reference prior roles, industry exposure, hiring involvement, or relevant technical knowledge when appropriate. All expert responses must remain objective, neutral, and career-focused, avoiding promotional content, personal anecdotes, or lifestyle guidance. Verified experts may receive enhanced visibility on the platform, but only if their contributions consistently meet our quality standards and align with Jobicy’s career-focused topic guidelines.
