# Should I learn cybersecurity skills to boost my IT career?

## Description:

The IT field is very competitive and constantly evolving, and cybersecurity threats keep increasing. I’m working in general IT support but struggle to stand out. Would gaining cybersecurity knowledge significantly improve my job prospects and career growth?

Everyone and their grandma is jumping on the cyber bandwagon thinking certifcations = instant promotion. The real game? Navigating office politics better than your peers, making yourself indispensable by solving *their* problems before they even ask, and speaking human — not just tech jargon. Yeah, snag a cert or two (think CompTIA Security+), but don’t neglect those soft skills; 70% of workplace success hinges on them. Otherwise? You’re stuck as "that guy who kind of knows security" with zero influence.

It definitely helped me get noticed a bit since not many people on our team cared much about security back then. But honestly, just knowing the tech wasn’t enough — I had to figure out how to explain security problems in ways my non-tech bosses understood and also be ready to jump into other projects that weren’t strictly security-related. So maybe learning cybersecurity will give you an edge, but I guess it’s really about mixing that knowledge with how you communicate and help your team overall.

It’s less about just knowing tech and more about how u communicate it and work with others

I’ve seen solid engineers stall because they couldn’t explain risk in plain English. One clear update in a meeting beat 20 fancy certs.

If you want promotions, practice:
- writing short status updates
- explaining one technical issue to a non-tech person
- asking good questions without sounding defensive
