# Can I transition from pet grooming to veterinary assistant roles?

## Description:

I have years of experience as a pet groomer but want to move into a veterinary assistant position. Is it realistic to make this shift without formal vet tech training, and how should I frame my grooming experience on applications?

Copy answer link Report answerGrooming background is a huge W for animal handling, restraint, and spotting behavior changes, but don’t oversell it - clinics can sniff out gaps fast 🐾. Frame it with numbers like 5+ years, 1,000s of pets handled, clean restraint, calm under stress, then add any shadowing or CPR course you’ve done so you don’t look all vibes and no medical basics 😅

But moving into vet assistant roles usually means getting some hands-on experience or training with medical tasks like administering meds or observing symptoms. Not sure if just highlighting grooming will get you in the door, though pointing out your animal care knowledge doesn’t hurt. Maybe think about short courses or certifications to boost those skills? How much medical stuff have you done on the job already? Could make a difference!
