## Description:

I just got a job offer in a city with way higher living costs but the salary offer doesn’t reflect that at all. How do I make a strong case for more pay without losing the offer?

Copy answer link Report answerData first. Pull 3 local comps, then ask for a clean number: 10% to 20% more base or a $10k to $15k sign-on. Mention taxes and rent only as context. No sob story. Numbers win; vague hardship gets ignored.

Push with two numbers: what similar roles pay in that city, and what u need to make the move pencil out. Then ask for base or a sign-on, not just sympathy. That part has saved me more than once, after a few awkward silences

Don’t threaten to walk unless you’d actually do it, and don’t blur base pay with one-time perks.

If they hedge, trade for signing bonus or remote days instead of just repeating the ask.

Show local comps, then ask for a concrete bump or sign-on because the company cares about internal fairness and saving face, not your landlord. Keep it calm, specific, and slightly inconvenient for them to ignore.

Low-quality, duplicate, or AI-generated content that lacks substance is filtered out to maintain accuracy and credibility across the platform.

What makes a high-quality answer

A high-quality answer offers structured, practical, and experience-based guidance that directly addresses the question. Strong answers include specific steps, industry examples, tools or frameworks, and clear reasoning rather than vague opinions. They avoid emotional language, personal journaling, or lifestyle advice, and instead focus on skills, responsibilities, hiring expectations, resumes, interviews, salary insights, and career transitions. Answers written by individuals with verified professional backgrounds or direct experience in the field are prioritized.

Expert participation rules
