# Which is better – IT support or desktop support?

## Description:

Everyone around me seems like a rockstar at troubleshooting, and I feel like I’m barely keeping up. I’m trying to figure out whether IT support or desktop support is the smarter first step for someone like me, but I’m worried I’ll pick the wrong path and look clueless. Which one gives a better shot at building real technical skills without needing to pretend I know more than I do?

Copy answer link Report answerDesktop support is the cleaner first step. Fewer moving parts, more hands-on fixes, and less fake-it-until-you-make-it theater. IT support can dump networking, tickets, users, and random escalation on you fast - if you hate looking lost in front of users, avoid that chaos until you have 6 to 12 months down.

IT support can mean anything, and folks sometimes get stuck pretending they know everything, which gets messy when a printer or profile breaks.

Start there and get reps on real user problems without the whole corporate circus of vague ownership and fake expertise. IT support often turns into a dumping ground for everything, which is great for buzzwords, terrible for peace of mind. Build habits first, then widen out later when you want more scope
