# Is a referral from a former manager a warning sign?

Question details My former manager offered to refer me to their distributed team. Could it seem biased to the hiring panel?

- Ask them to refer you through the normal process and let the hiring panel assess you independently.
- The useful criterion: it’s only a concern if they can influence the final decision without disclosure or are expected to interview you directly.
