Incident response is a core community operation when conflict, harassment, safety concerns, or rapidly spreading misinformation affect members. Strong responders distinguish urgent risks from routine disagreements, communicate with clarity, preserve relevant evidence, and apply policies consistently. They also know when to move discussion out of public view, involve designated stakeholders, and close incidents with appropriate follow-up.

### Instructions and covered skills

Read every scenario carefully before selecting a response. Focus on the stated facts, the community policy context, and the immediate risk to participants. Do not rush because several options may appear reasonable at first glance. Choose the action that best supports safety, fairness, and a constructive community environment. Avoid distractions and turn off notifications while completing the test. Use your own judgment and select one answer for each item.

### Key Areas

This test covers the practical judgment required to manage incidents that disrupt a community's safety, trust, or ability to participate. Candidates assess reports involving personal attacks, threats, coordinated disruption, privacy concerns, misinformation, and emotionally charged disputes. The focus is on identifying the immediate risk, selecting a proportionate response, and using calm language that does not intensify the situation.

Effective incident handling also requires reliable documentation. Candidates should understand how to record the report source, relevant timestamps, links or screenshots, actions taken, policy rationale, and ownership of follow-up work. Good records help teams make consistent decisions, identify repeat patterns, and provide a clear handoff when several people contribute to a response.

The test also addresses escalation judgment. Responders need to recognize when an issue can be resolved through a standard enforcement action and when it requires involvement from safety, legal, security, leadership, or another designated function. Public communication choices matter as well: a response should protect confidential details, correct harmful assumptions when appropriate, and explain process without debating every enforcement decision.

### Recommended Preparation

Review a community's code of conduct, enforcement matrix, reporting pathways, privacy expectations, and crisis communication procedures. Practice separating observed facts from assumptions and writing concise incident notes that another teammate can understand without added context. Consider how the same conduct may require different handling depending on urgency, repetition, power dynamics, credible threats, or exposure of personal information.

Prepare by reviewing examples of de-escalating language. Useful responses acknowledge impact, set boundaries, describe the next procedural step, and avoid public arguments about intent. Familiarity with escalation contacts, response-time expectations, evidence retention practices, and post-incident reviews will support sound decisions across the scenarios in this test.

### Examples of questions

1. What information should be captured when documenting a reported community incident?
2. When should a public discussion be moved to a private support channel?
3. Which response most effectively acknowledges a member's concern without admitting unverified facts?
4. What is the purpose of assigning an incident owner during a coordinated response?
5. How should a responder handle a report that lacks sufficient evidence?
6. Which factor should determine whether an incident requires urgent escalation?
7. What should a community team do after removing a harmful public post?
8. How can a responder avoid escalating conflict in a public thread?
9. What makes an incident resolution note useful for future reviewers?
10. When is it appropriate to publish a community-wide clarification after an incident? 03
