Content teams rely on style guides to create clear, credible, and recognizable communications across articles, product pages, emails, and social posts. Strong copyediting protects meaning while resolving mechanical errors and applying house conventions consistently. This assessment covers practical editorial decisions using a fictional house style: use sentence case for headings, spell out one through nine, use numerals for 10 and above, use the serial comma, capitalize formal product names, and use US English spellings.

### Instructions and covered skills

Read each question carefully before selecting your response. Apply the stated house style and preserve the intended meaning of the copy. Focus on the requested editorial issue rather than rewriting for personal preference. Avoid distractions and turn off notifications before you begin. Choose the option that creates the clearest, most consistent published copy. Review punctuation, capitalization, and word choice closely when options appear similar.

### Key Areas

This test measures the ability to apply an editorial style guide accurately while protecting the author’s intended meaning. Candidates work with sentence case, formal names, US English spelling, serial commas, number treatment, abbreviations, hyphenation, and consistent terminology. They identify errors that can reduce clarity, including misplaced modifiers, unclear pronouns, dangling constructions, inconsistent verb forms, and mismatched list structures.

Effective copyediting also requires sound judgment. A strong editor distinguishes a required style change from an optional rewrite, avoids introducing factual claims, and preserves an approved brand voice. The test examines whether candidates can make targeted revisions rather than overedit. It also covers common publication decisions, such as when to define an abbreviation, when to use an en dash for a range, and how to handle quoted material without altering its meaning.

### Recommended Preparation

Review a current editorial style guide and note its rules for capitalization, punctuation, numerals, spelling, dates, headings, and product names. Practice editing short passages by making one issue at a time visible: first check consistency, then grammar, then punctuation, and finally readability. Compare repeated terms, labels, and headings to confirm that the same concept is written the same way throughout a piece.

Pay close attention to changes that affect meaning. When a sentence is grammatically possible but ambiguous, select wording that makes the relationship between ideas explicit. When multiple variants seem acceptable in general usage, follow the stated house convention. Build a habit of checking lists for parallel construction, verifying that modifiers attach to the intended words, and confirming that abbreviations are introduced clearly. These practices support reliable editing across content formats and collaborative publishing workflows.
