Clear decision records reduce repeated discussions, hidden assumptions, and uncertainty about who acts next. Remote teams need concise, accessible documentation that captures the decision, its rationale, accountable owner, affected stakeholders, and review points. Strong decision logging supports transparency while allowing team members to work across locations and schedules.

### Instructions and covered skills

Read each scenario carefully before selecting a response. Focus on the decision-recording practice that best supports shared accountability and future reference. Consider how a teammate who was absent would understand the context and next action. Do not get distracted by familiar tools; evaluate the quality of the documentation and communication process. Turn off notifications and work in a quiet setting where you can concentrate. Review your selections before submitting the test.

### Key Areas

This test covers the practices that make remote decisions visible, traceable, and actionable. Candidates work with decision records that identify the issue, final outcome, rationale, accountable owner, contributors, affected groups, and expected follow-up. They evaluate when a discussion has produced a decision versus when it remains an open question, and they distinguish a decision owner from people who provide input or carry out tasks.

The test also addresses documentation quality. Useful records state the scope of a decision, identify assumptions and constraints, link relevant evidence, and note dates for reconsideration when appropriate. Candidates consider how to capture dissent constructively, document temporary choices, and update records when circumstances change. Attention is given to communicating decisions in channels where impacted colleagues can find them without searching through meeting recordings or direct messages.

Scenarios examine common remote-work conditions, including asynchronous participation, cross-functional dependencies, differing time zones, and team members who were absent from a meeting. The goal is to preserve context without turning every record into a transcript. Effective candidates can write or recognize concise summaries that enable action while retaining the information needed for later review.

### Recommended Preparation

Review decision logs, architecture decision records, project decision registers, or similar shared documentation used by distributed teams. Practice summarizing a meeting outcome in a short format that states what was decided, why it was decided, who owns the next step, and when the decision will be reviewed. Compare an actionable decision record with a meeting note that only lists discussion topics.

Prepare by considering how decisions affect people who were not present. Look for ways to make records searchable, link them to related work, and notify impacted stakeholders without creating unnecessary message traffic. Review methods for recording unresolved questions, dissenting viewpoints, dependencies, and reversibility. These habits help teams maintain momentum and accountability even when collaboration occurs across different schedules.

### Examples of questions

1. What information should a decision log include after a remote planning meeting?
2. When should a decision owner update affected stakeholders?
3. How should a team record an unresolved decision with a deadline?
4. What is the purpose of documenting alternatives that were considered?
5. Where should a cross-functional team store its decision records?
6. How can a decision log distinguish ownership from consultation?
7. What should happen when new evidence changes an earlier decision?
8. How should a team document a temporary decision?
9. Why should decision records link to supporting materials?
10. What makes a decision summary useful to colleagues in other time zones? 03
