### Instructions and covered skills

Read each scenario and select the response that best supports a reliable usability study. Stay focused on the stated research objective rather than assuming what participants mean. Turn off notifications and complete the test in a quiet setting when possible. Consider participant behavior, task context, and evidence quality before choosing an answer. Do not rush through scenario details or rely only on personal design preferences. Review your selections before submitting your responses.

### Key Areas

This assessment examines the practical work required to plan and synthesize usability studies for websites, applications, and digital services. Candidates should understand how to convert a product question into a focused study objective, select participants who reflect the intended audience, and create realistic scenarios that reveal natural behavior. Strong performance requires recognizing the difference between a task instruction and a step-by-step tutorial, since useful sessions allow participants to choose their own path.

The test also covers moderation practices. This includes using neutral language, encouraging participants to think aloud without interrupting their work, responding appropriately when someone asks for help, and avoiding explanations that influence behavior. Candidates should be able to identify useful observations, such as hesitation, repeated navigation changes, incorrect expectations, task abandonment, and mismatches between interface language and user language.

Insight synthesis is another central area. Candidates should be able to organize notes, identify recurring patterns across sessions, separate observations from interpretations, and connect findings to user impact. They should understand how frequency, severity, task importance, and evidence strength can inform prioritization. Effective findings describe what happened, where it happened, who experienced it, and why the issue matters to the product experience.

### Recommended Preparation

Prepare by reviewing usability test plans, moderator guides, task scenarios, and observation templates. Practice rewriting leading prompts into neutral prompts and turning product-focused instructions into realistic user goals. Watch recorded sessions or conduct short practice sessions, then document behaviors and quotes without immediately proposing a solution.

For synthesis practice, group notes by task and theme, identify repeated breakdowns, and write concise findings supported by evidence. Compare potential recommendations by considering the affected journey, the consequences for users, and the confidence provided by the sessions. Familiarity with remote and in-person testing workflows, consent practices, recording procedures, and stakeholder readouts will also support sound judgment during the assessment.

### Examples of questions

1. What is the primary purpose of a usability test?
2. Why should a facilitator avoid leading questions during a session?
3. What makes a participant task realistic for a study?
4. When should a team define success criteria for a task?
5. What observation may indicate that navigation labels are unclear?
6. Why is it useful to record participant quotes alongside behaviors?
7. What should a note taker capture when a participant pauses?
8. How can a team distinguish an isolated issue from a recurring pattern?
9. What is an effective way to present a usability finding to stakeholders?
10. Why should task scenarios avoid telling participants where to click? 03
