Acquia was co-founded in 2007 by Dries Buytaert and Jay Batson with the goal of creating a software company based on open source and the Drupal content management platform. Originating from Dries Buytaert’s creation of Drupal as an open source project in 2001 at the University of Antwerp in Belgium, Acquia was established to provide infrastructure, support, and services to large Drupal users.
The company started as three distinct businesses, including a support business similar to Red Hat’s model, a managed cloud-hosting service called Acquia Cloud, and Drupal Gardens, a Drupal-based hosted blogging platform. Over time, Acquia evolved into a digital experience platform (DXP), expanding beyond traditional web content management to address customer experience and digital engagement needs.
Acquia offers a portfolio of products that help enterprises manage content across multiple channels, integrating technologies to build tailored digital experiences. Their offerings include tools for content management, customer data platforms, marketing automation, and campaign management.
The company has achieved significant milestones such as being named a leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Digital Experience Platforms and hitting substantial revenue thresholds, including surpassing £100 million and $200 million in revenue over the years.
Acquia is backed by Vista Equity Partners, which acquired a majority stake in 2019 to support global expansion and open source software development. The leadership team combines extensive experience in technology to guide Acquia through the evolving landscape of digital experience delivery.
Headquartered in Boston, United States, Acquia remains committed to harnessing open source technology to empower organizations to build frictionless, relevant, accessible, and safe digital experiences for their customers.
