Consensys

Consensys is a private blockchain software technology company founded by Joseph Lubin in 2014, one of the original co-founders of Ethereum. The company is headquartered in Fort Worth, United States. Consensys serves as a pivotal pillar of the Ethereum ecosystem, developing and scaling blockchain tools and enterprise software products to empower the Web3 revolution.

The company’s product suite includes influential and widely used blockchain infrastructure such as MetaMask, the leading Ethereum wallet and browser extension; Infura, a scalable blockchain API platform for developers and enterprises; and Linea, a zero-knowledge rollup (zkEVM) aimed at scaling Ethereum. Consensys also offers smart contract audits and security services through Diligence, and developer tools like Truffle for building Ethereum decentralized applications.

Consensys operates as a venture studio that incubates Ethereum-based crypto projects, supporting developers, enterprises, governments, financial institutions, and individual crypto users. It has also acquired and evolved key blockchain technologies such as Quorum, a private business blockchain protocol originally developed with JPMorgan Chase, which has been used in central bank digital currency projects.

Over the years, Consensys has transitioned from experimental phases to focusing on profitability, emphasizing scalable infrastructure and regulatory compliance. The company underwent structural changes in 2020, spinning out Consensys Software Inc. that manages core products like MetaMask, while Consensys Mesh continues investing in and incubating new blockchain ventures.

Consensys is backed by major investors including Microsoft, Temasek, SoftBank, JPMorgan, Animoca Brands, Coinbase Ventures, and HSBC. It is regarded as one of the most important and innovative players in the blockchain and Ethereum software space, continuously advancing tools that facilitate decentralized finance (DeFi), NFTs, enterprise adoption, and Web3 development globally.

The company updated its branding in June 2023 to refresh its narrative and logo, reflecting its evolving identity in the blockchain industry and dropping the camelcase from its name to simply “Consensys.”
