The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an independent, non-profit organization founded in 1990 that focuses on practical solutions to integrating environmental and social priorities with economic development. It promotes human development and environmental sustainability through innovative research, communication, and partnerships. IISD operates globally with offices in Canada, Switzerland, and the United States, and works in over 70 countries worldwide.

IISD is recognized for its rigorous research and engagement with citizens, businesses, and policymakers to achieve sustainable development goals. The institute supports and reports on international negotiations, emphasizing integrated, multidisciplinary approaches to sustainability challenges. It receives core funding from the Government of Canada and other international agencies, foundations, and the private sector.

Key initiatives under IISD include the IISD Experimental Lakes Area, a natural laboratory for scientific research; the NAP Global Network focused on climate adaptation; the Global Subsidies Initiative which helps align subsidies with sustainability; and the Earth Negotiations Bulletin offering balanced coverage of UN environmental negotiations.

IISD also manages the SDG Knowledge Hub, providing daily updates on the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and supports projects related to nature-based infrastructure, sustainability standards, and mining governance for sustainable development. Its work influences policy and implementation to help create a world where both people and the planet can thrive.
