Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services (MiHIN)

Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services (MiHIN) is Michigan’s state-designated non-profit entity focused on improving healthcare quality, efficiency, and patient outcomes by facilitating secure and private health information exchange across the state. Established in 2012, MiHIN serves as a vital digital infrastructure supporting healthcare providers, public health, and community organizations to access accurate and timely health data for better care coordination and quality improvement.

MiHIN’s services include enabling the exchange of clinical and social determinants of health information to support care transitions, reduce diagnostic and medication errors, and prevent overtreatment and administrative inefficiencies. Through this shared infrastructure, MiHIN aims to reduce healthcare burden and waste, drive technology adoption, and activate research and translational science for health transformation.

The organization collaborates with skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, payers, and public health agencies to enhance data quality and availability, as well as providing tools like MIGateway to support care coordination and quality reporting. MiHIN is recognized for leveraging advanced cloud technologies to improve healthcare outcomes, having been acknowledged by Amazon Web Services for its digital transformation efforts.

Beyond clinical data exchange, MiHIN actively works on integrating social care information to address social determinants of health, enabling interoperability between siloed systems and supporting statewide population health management. This includes initiatives to promote bidirectional exchange of social service referrals and to create a comprehensive Social Care Record for populations in Michigan.

Headquartered in East Lansing, Michigan, MiHIN continues to innovate and expand its technological environment, facilitating safer, more optimal care and faster learning and innovation across Michigan’s healthcare ecosystem.
