Upswing was founded in 2013 by Melvin Hines, who experienced firsthand the challenges faced by under-resourced students and was inspired to create equitable access to educational support services. We believe that a student’s background or location should not limit their success, and every student deserves access to the same comprehensive support resources regardless of who they are or where they come from.
Over the past 11 years, Upswing has helped hundreds of thousands of students gain access to vital online support services such as tutoring, advising, assignment review, and mental health resources. Our all-in-one platform integrates both on-campus and remote student support, making it easier for students to find and use the resources they need to succeed at any time.
We understand that many students do not know about or cannot easily access the help available on their campuses when it is most needed. To bridge this gap, we provide a flexible, modular solution that can be tailored to the unique needs of students, staff, tutors, and advisors, ensuring timely, equitable support to improve retention.
Our SMS engagement tool, Ana, helps students stay connected and supported by sending proactive reminders, resource information, and encouragement, especially benefiting those who may be less likely to seek help on their own. Through these efforts, we aim to enhance the overall student experience by addressing academic as well as mental health and advising needs holistically.
