We are seeking a passionate and experienced Staff Writer to join our Culture team. In this role, you will produce insightful analysis, thought-provoking criticism, and engaging original reporting covering culture and entertainment. You will explore questions about how culture shapes our world, writing both short-form commentary and in-depth, long-form stories.
The ideal candidate has a distinct voice, a sense of humor, and the ability to connect with diverse audiences. We welcome applicants with expertise in interdisciplinary subjects, such as the intersections of culture with politics, food, science, and more. Responsibilities

  • Write compelling, voice-driven analysis and cultural commentary
  • Conduct interviews and original reporting on relevant cultural topics
  • Explore interdisciplinary connections between entertainment and broader societal issues
  • Collaborate with a dynamic editorial team while working independently to meet deadlines

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of journalism experience, with a specialty in film
  • Strong, fast-paced writing skills for digital media, with familiarity with AP Style
  • Proficiency in journalism standards and best practices
  • Understanding of Salon’s voice and editorial mission
  • Proficiency in digital analytics tools like Chartbeat and experience with CMS platforms
  • Effective communication and time management skills
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent newsroom training

Additional Information

  • Full-time salaried position: $70,000 – $80,000, based on experience
  • Full benefits package, including unlimited PTO
  • The position is covered under Salon’s Writers Guild of America, East, Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Must be legally able to work in the U.S.
  • Regular Monday-Friday schedule with occasional evening/weekend work as needed for events coverage
