The Payroll Tax Manager leads the newly formed payroll tax team, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant payroll tax processing in alignment with government regulations.
This role involves overseeing payroll tax operations, validating employee and company-level tax data, and implementing best practices for efficiency and compliance. The ideal candidate has experience in U.S. multistate taxation and leading payroll tax professionals in a dynamic environment. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, adaptability, and effective time management are essential.
Success in this role requires expertise in payroll tax compliance, process improvements, and change management. Critical thinking, sound decision-making, and advanced communication skills are key. The Payroll Tax Manager also serves as a subject matter expert, driving audits, reconciliations, and system enhancements while collaborating across departments to ensure seamless payroll tax operations.
How you will contribute:
- Lead the payroll tax team in processing payroll taxes and validating employee and company-level payroll tax data.
- Implement and refine payroll tax procedures to enhance efficiency and compliance.
- Ensure accurate and timely payroll tax updates, including legislative changes and employee state/local tax updates.
- Conduct regular audits and reconciliations to maintain data integrity.
- Develop and implement payroll tax best practices to optimize workflows.
- Maintain accurate payroll tax records and reports.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, tax, and hour laws.
- Support internal and external audits.
- Identify and recommend updates to payroll software, systems, and procedures.
- Collaborate with finance to ensure accuracy in payroll tax-related general ledger accounts.
- Work directly with payroll tax vendors to ensure timely filings and amendments.
- Provide guidance on tax adjustments, W-2 corrections, supplemental payroll runs, and reversals.
- Report significant matters and keep the Senior Payroll Manager informed of departmental activities.

Minimum Qualifications:
- At least three years of leadership experience in U.S. payroll (processing, validation, tax compliance, wage attachments, year-end reporting, etc.), with five or more years preferred.
- Direct experience with U.S. multistate tax processingÂ
- Possesses extensive knowledge of U.S. multistate payroll tax regulations and mobile employee taxation
- Proficiency in payroll functions, including preparation, balancing, and internal controls
- Has expertise with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel
- Proficiency in Workday PayrollÂ
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience managing in-house tax filings
- Professional certifications such as FPC, CPP, SHRM-CP, or PHR
- Experience with Ceridian/Dayforce tax filing
- Experience leading through change, such as software implementations, mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, or rapid expansion
