Legal Counsel, Trade Compliance
Legal Counsel, Trade Compliance serves as GitLab’s subject matter expert for global trade compliance matters, providing strategic advice to GitLab Team Members and developing and enhancing controls, policies and procedures needed to support growth from a trade compliance perspective.

What you’ll do in this role
- Oversee GitLab’s trade compliance program by developing, maintaining, and enhancing internal controls, and policies and procedures relating to trade compliance
- Leverage automation opportunities and technologies to proactively detect and mitigate trade compliance issues
- Monitor, interpret, and respond to developments in trade control law, regulatory expectations, and enforcement trends
- Serve as subject matter expert, providing guidance and responding to trade compliance questions from GitLab Team Members and various third parties
- Develop and present internal compliance training
We’re looking for
- Experience in trade compliance, with emphasis on sanctions and export controls
- JD/LLB or local law degree equivalent and admission to local governing body
- Familiarity with U.S. Export Administration Regulations and OFAC sanctions programs (non-U.S. jurisdictions would be an added advantage)
- Experience with export jurisdiction and classification determinations and encryption controls
- Ability to drive complex, cross functional projects including setting scope, reaching consensus, executing on tasks, and presenting results
- Practical yet creative problem-solving approach that emphasizes addressing business needs while protecting GitLab’s interests
- Sound, practical judgment even in ambiguous situations
- Previous experience in a remote work environment would be an added advantage
- Familiarity working across the globe, to support multiple time zones and cultures
- Shared interest and ability to work in accordance with GitLab values

The base salary range for this role’s listed level is currently for residents of listed locations only. Grade level and salary ranges are determined through interviews and a review of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant, equity with other team members, and alignment with market data. See more information on our benefits and equity. Sales roles are also eligible for incentive pay targeted at up to 100% of the offered base salary.

$100,800—$194,400 USD
California/New York/New Jersey pay range
$100,800—$216,000 USD
