About the Team & the Role:

Envato is in prime position to grow towards our vision of being the must have and most used creative companion in the world. However, it’s not a straight and narrow path! We are operating in an increasingly competitive and dynamic ecosystem, sitting at the frontier of an exciting yet ambiguous industry evolution as people and products more rapidly embrace creative technology and artificial intelligence developments. This role is a pivotal part of the next phase of Envato’s journey, which requires us to be even more customer focussed, and evidence-driven – so taking our research capabilities and empowerment to the next level.
Our Research team sits in the Strategy, Analytics and Research division, where our objective is to use data and insights to cut through the noise and meaningfully steer our business toward growth, partnering with teams and leadership to drive strategically aligned, customer-led, and data-driven decisions. The Senior Research Manager will report to the Chief Strategy Officer, and partner closely with product, design, strategy, and marketing leadership and teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Setting our research strategy and agenda across Envato – identify and deliver the research we need to drive forward our product, marketing and strategic choices, including what the best methodologies and solutions for us to do that (including when to in-house, and when to outsource)
  • Leading and collaborating with partners across the business to identify research needs and opportunities, execute on these, and really drive tangible outcomes that inform our direction and decisions.
  • Clearly define and elevate the role of research in customer-centric product development and UX – from information provider to partner, advisor, and enablerLead, manage and support our small but mighty research team, and steward research scalability through empowering and encouraging our product and design teams to get their hands dirty in creative and informative ways to get close to the customer, without losing research and inference integrity
  • Undertaking research – this is not just a managerial role, we believe that the best managers and leaders of functions across the business are subject matter experts first and foremost and roll-up-the-sleeves regularly and keep their skills honed, and stay close to the problems we’re trying to solve.
  • Raising Envato’s shared understanding of our customers through coherently synthesising customer insights from across our business – product, marketing, analytics, customer success, strategy – and synthesising that into a powerful narrative that drives customer empathy, domain knowledge, strategic and product choices, and empowers our teams to make better decisions every day that deliver more customer value

Knowledge, Experience:

  • 10+ years’ experience in a research focused role within the tech industry
  • A relevant Bachelor’s degree (e.g. Psychology, Human-Centered Design, Marketing, Sociology, Anthropology etc.), higher level degree a strong plus
  • Strong technical skills and experience with conducting, analysing, and interpreting qualitative and quantitative research studies – you know what good looks like!
  • Strong understanding of different research methodologies both quantitative and qualitativeHigh level of competence in using survey tools (e.g. Qualtrics) and data analysis software (e.g. R)
  • Managed budgets, procurement of research tools, managing incentive pools
  • Built scalable research teams – embedding the right balance of process rigour, knowledge sharing, self service, upskilling and ways of working.
  • Managed, coached and mentored a diverse and high performing team of researchers – honing their craft, guiding their development, and empowering them to work collaboratively to solve problems

Key Attributes:

  • Experience or passion for the creative industry (graphic design, video, music, photography, web design, etc) is a major plus, including a broad understanding of the creative process and technologies that inform the diverse needs of our customers
  • You are curious and well-read, looking ‘up and out’ at the evolving industry, identifying opportunities where we can get ahead (or even where we need to go to remain competitive!), and making those opportunities happen
  • Proven analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving abilities; thrives on complexity, exhibits second order thinking and great commercial judgement.
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and a complex, changing environment
  • Ability to articulate complex ideas and concepts in a way that they are easily understood, and capable of presenting ideas and progress to internal and external stakeholders
  • Have a continuous improvement mindset – looking for opportunities where you can make the largest impact and seeing it through
  • People love working with you, and you enjoy building relationships and trust with cross functional teams and their leaders such as product, design, marketing, analytics, strategy, engineering.
