Sample interview questions
I would first measure startup with Android Studio Profiler, Perfetto, and startup tracing to identify work occurring on the main thread. I would defer nonessential initialization, optimize dependency construction, reduce eager disk or network work, and verify the improvement with repeatable cold-start benchmarks.
I would use clear feature and core modules with well-defined APIs, separating UI, domain, and data responsibilities. Dependency boundaries, consistent conventions, automated tests, and incremental migration plans help teams refactor safely while keeping build times and coupling under control.
MVVM works well for many screens because it provides a straightforward separation between UI and state-holding ViewModels. I would favor MVI where explicit unidirectional state, event streams, and reproducible state transitions are especially valuable, such as complex transactional or real-time flows.
I avoid retaining Activity, Fragment, View, or Context references beyond their lifecycle, cancel coroutines and subscriptions at the appropriate lifecycle boundary, and clear view bindings when views are destroyed. I also use LeakCanary and targeted tests to detect leaks early and investigate retained-object paths.
I would model connection and loading states explicitly, use retry and backoff policies, validate and sequence incoming events, and persist appropriate cached data for graceful fallback. The UI should clearly communicate stale or reconnecting states while the networking layer resumes safely without duplicating or losing updates.
