The role, at a glance.
Skillsoft is seeking a senior commercial operations leader to design, launch, and operate an integrated renewals, pricing, deal desk, and contract-governance function. Sample interview questions
I would begin with a diagnostic of current processes, decision rights, handoffs, service levels, systems, and exception volumes. I would then define the target operating model, including governance, intake paths, approval matrices, KPIs, staffing, and technology requirements, before piloting priority workflows and scaling based on measurable results.
I would track renewal rate, gross and net revenue retention, ARR at risk, renewal cycle time, discount rate, realized price versus list price, approval turnaround time, exception volume, margin impact, forecast accuracy, and seller satisfaction. The metrics should connect operational speed and quality to commercial outcomes rather than measuring activity alone.
I use clearly tiered approval policies, pre-approved guardrails, and data-backed exception criteria to allow routine deals to move quickly while escalating material economic risk. Regular analysis of discount patterns, win rates, margin, and renewal outcomes helps refine those guardrails and reduce unnecessary friction.
I would prioritize controlled use cases such as intake classification, policy guidance, contract-risk summarization, approval routing, data-quality checks, and KPI monitoring. Each use case should have defined human decision owners, auditable outputs, access controls, and performance monitoring so automation improves consistency while critical commercial decisions retain appropriate oversight.
I establish shared objectives, transparent decision rights, and a common fact base around revenue, margin, risk, and customer impact. I also create recurring governance forums and escalation paths so disagreements are resolved quickly using agreed policies and business data rather than informal negotiation.
