Senior Backend Engineer

I build backend services for enterprise platforms including the MySacco multi-tenant SACCO digital-banking platform and Kenya Power digital channels. I develop services supporting FOSA/BOSA operations, lending workflows, member and loan-product identification, eligibility checks, account categorization, mobile-loan filtering, and guarantor rules.

I design adapters and transaction workflows across Microsoft Dynamics/Navision, Apache Fineract, Coretec, Kafka, M-PESA, withdrawal and B2C callbacks, and downstream SACCO and ERP updates. I led backend delivery for the Nuru WhatsApp self-service solution, supporting approximately 35–50 customer journeys and roughly 10,000 daily requests using WebFlux and Redis-backed conversation state. I also support modernization of legacy monoliths into containerized microservices for mobile, web, and USSD channels.

I played a key engineering and technical-lead role in migrating the Karuru commerce platform from a large legacy monolith to a data-product architecture comprising more than 25 microservices. I planned and executed production-data migration while keeping the live business operational across multiple African markets.

I designed and operated distributed services using gRPC, GraphQL, and GCP, and worked with DevOps teams on deployment automation and production operations. I introduced feature-flag-driven rollout to enable daily deployments, improved failure investigation through operational data and root-cause analysis, and helped reduce MTTR by more than half. I also led an approximately eight-person squad through planning, reviews, mentoring, hiring, and performance management.

I developed and supported I&M Bank's Business Connect platform during the shift from branch and cash-based processes to digital servicing. My contributions supported onboarding of approximately 1,500 SMEs and around 10 major business chains, including Chandarana.

I built KRA tax-payment and Kenya Power bill-payment integrations, as well as customer self-onboarding and account-statement functionality. I owned work across development, system integration testing, UAT, go-live rollover, and post-release support, collaborating with business, operations, and external vendors. I also performed database analysis, created technical documentation, and implemented audit, security, and compliance recommendations.

I built backend services and integrations for digital payments, cooperative-society lending, mobile lending, and transaction reconciliation. For MobiGrow, I supported cooperative-society lending services that had onboarded approximately 10 societies and represented about 5,000 members by the time I left.

I automated reconciliation across core-banking suspense accounts and Visa and Mastercard payment channels, helping teams reduce exception resolution from days or weeks to about a day. I also built Java middleware for Vooma and Mobi Loan, automated Credit Reference Bureau reporting, and enhanced the Duma Portal and other enterprise integrations. My work included requirements analysis, solution design, architecture reviews, testing, and production delivery.
