About Turtle Rock Studios

Turtle Rock Studios is an American video game developer founded in March 2002 by Chris Ashton and Phil Robb. Their goal was to create the best workplace they had ever experienced, fostering creativity and passion among team members. The studio is known for its emphasis on creative engagement and a positive work environment that encourages employees to bring their full creative potential daily.

Initially working in collaboration with Valve, Turtle Rock Studios contributed to well-known titles like Counter-Strike: Condition Zero and co-developed the influential Left 4 Dead series. They also developed games such as Evolve and Back 4 Blood, which served as a spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead. These projects have received varied reviews but contributed significantly to the cooperative shooter genre.

The company was acquired by Valve in 2008 and was known as Valve South during that period but was re-established as an independent entity under Slamfire Inc. in 2010. In 2011, the studio expanded rapidly and opened Turtle Rock Garage, focusing on casual and experimental games for platforms like iPhone and Xbox Live.

In December 2021, Turtle Rock Studios’ parent company Slamfire Inc. was acquired by Tencent, ensuring the studio remained autonomous under new ownership. With a history rooted in the collaborative development of influential digital entertainment titles, Turtle Rock Studios continues to be a notable entity in the video game industry focused on original and consulting services within the digital entertainment space.

The studio’s foundation in Los Angeles and its focus on innovation and team culture have positioned it as a respected developer in the video game industry, continuously advancing the cooperative shooter genre and expanding its creative horizons through new projects and platforms.
