About Nelnet

Follow and catch a glimpse of what #LifeAtNelnet is like.

As a Nelnet company, the perks at NBS go beyond our benefits package. You’re part of a community, invested in you as an individual and united by our mission to create opportunities for people where they live, learn and work.

We’re looking for a Staff Product Designer to join our Product Design team at Nelnet Business Services. As a Staff Product Designer you will lead projects and multiple teams across complex product areas.

You’ll collaborate closely with our FACTS® business and product teams that have set out to help solve the unique challenges that K-12 school administrators, teachers, and families face with education technology, services, and financial management solutions. Whether a school is streamlining their admissions, managing grants and financial aid, or better understanding a family or student throughout their system–you’ll help make it easy, understandable, and dare we say, fun.

You’ll contribute to the mission of FACTS® and NBS Product Design by:

  • Helping to drive the design strategy and direction within our platform of products, shaping current and future work towards a north star.
  • Setting a high bar for design excellence. You’ll ensure outstanding product experiences, producing high-quality work no matter how big or small the task may be.
  • Using your full range of Product Design skills–not limited to design prototypes– to discover, design, and deliver simple, well-crafted experiences that our customers love. You’ll leverage your excellent communication and facilitation skills to align and collaborate with cross functional and senior leadership teams.
  • Actively contribute to our healthy design team culture and mentoring other designers–especially those who also work on FACTS® products.

This role will give you the opportunity to:

  • Own your impact. You decide with product teams what opportunities to work on and help to define what success looks like.
  • Elevate product quality. You’ll work on an enterprise-level product suite with a strong, loyal customer base that has ample opportunities to modernize and grow.
  • Be part of positive change. Everyday we’re investing in the educational lives of students and their families by serving schools and their staff.

A bit about you:

  • You have a portfolio of well-crafted, impactful work that showcases your ability to lead successful large-scale projects across cross functional teams that solve real problems.
  • You’re an seasoned collaborator, designing in the open, leveraging other functions’ expertise, and taking them on the journey with you.
  • You have strong visual design and interaction design skills, with a passion for high quality fit and finish. You’ve worked with design systems to produce beautiful and functional designs that scale.
  • You can articulate your decisions clearly and credibly, relying on qualitative and quantitative data to inform your perspective.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Set design requirements based on information from internal teams and external user research which advances the goals of product and business strategies.
  • Identify new product improvement opportunities.
  • Analyze how a new product satisfies market needs and consumer preferences.
  • Rely heavily on both qualitative and quantitative data to make informed decisions.
  • Coordinate with other design team members to ensure consistent and accurate design work and communication.
  • Present product design ideas to cross-functional teams and senior leadership.
  • Balance high level creative vision with practical and manageable steps towards improvement.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Over 5 years of experience with design or UX

EXPERIENCE:

  • Proven experience with the full design process including research, ideation, wireframing, testing, visualizing, evaluating success, and communicating results.
  • Experience leading successful large-scale projects across cross functional teams.
  • Experience designing digital products.
  • Experience using data to inform design and product decisions.
  • Expert experience in Figma.

COMPETENCIES – SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:

  • An intuitive eye for customer needs beyond the obvious.
  • Ability to collect and interpret both qualitative and quantitative feedback.
  • A well-rounded portfolio of product design work, demonstrating a strong understanding of business objectives.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and persuade around design concepts.
  • Ability to facilitate workshops with cross-functional partners to move the collective group forward.
  • Passion for design and users; not satisfied with the status quo and always thinking of ways to improve.
  • Dynamic, creative personality, effective at engaging and influencing a variety of audiences.

Please note: All candidates must submit a portfolio with their application.

Salary range: $115,000 – $140,000

Our benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, HSA and FSA, generous earned time off, 401K/student loan repayment, life insurance & AD&D insurance, employee assistance program, employee stock purchase program, tuition reimbursement, performance-based incentive pay, short- and long-term disability, and a robust wellness program.
