Cover letter sample
Dear Hiring Team,
I am excited to apply for the Devices & IoT Field Engineering Manager role at Canonical. My background in embedded Linux, Ubuntu/Debian-based systems, IoT solution architecture, and customer-facing engineering aligns well with leading a distributed presales and professional-services team.
I would bring a hands-on, accountable leadership style focused on coaching engineers, delivering secure device solutions, and translating technical capabilities into measurable customer value. I am also comfortable working across time zones and partnering with product, engineering, and commercial stakeholders.
I would welcome the opportunity to help Canonical expand its secure connected-device ecosystem and develop a high-performing Americas field engineering organization.
Sample interview questions
I would begin by understanding the team’s skill mix, active opportunities, delivery commitments, customer escalations, and regional market priorities. I would establish clear operating metrics for pipeline support, project health, utilization, customer outcomes, and team well-being, then use regular one-to-ones and planning reviews to remove blockers and develop capability.
I would assess device lifecycle requirements first: hardware constraints, connectivity, threat model, update strategy, fleet scale, compliance needs, and operational ownership. I would then recommend an architecture using Ubuntu or Ubuntu Core where appropriate, emphasizing secure boot, image management, OTA updates, observability, and a support model that fits the customer’s risk profile.
I use explicit priorities, milestone-based plans, named owners, and transparent capacity management. For presales work, I qualify opportunities based on strategic value and probability; for services, I protect delivery commitments and escalate trade-offs early when conflicts arise.
I would coach through structured one-to-ones, practical technical reviews, customer-engagement debriefs, and individualized development plans. I would give timely, specific feedback tied to observable behaviors and outcomes, while creating opportunities for engineers to progressively own more complex customer and leadership responsibilities.
I would translate recurring customer needs, objections, deployment patterns, and competitive signals into concise, evidence-based feedback. I would prioritize the feedback by customer impact and revenue potential, validate it with stakeholders, and partner with product and engineering teams on actionable next steps.
