Sample interview questions
Describe a complex product feature you owned from initial scope through production rollout.

I would explain how I clarified the user problem and success metrics, broke the work into technical milestones, designed the architecture, and partnered with stakeholders throughout delivery. I would also cover testing, rollout safeguards, monitoring, and the post-launch results or lessons learned.

How do you approach architectural decisions in a Rails and React application?

I start with user needs, operational constraints, and expected system growth, then choose the simplest design that meets those requirements. I document tradeoffs around data ownership, API contracts, performance, security, maintainability, and observability so the team can make an informed decision.

How do you remain effective in a documentation-first, low-meeting remote culture?

I write clear design proposals, decision records, status updates, and pull-request context before relying on synchronous discussion. I make assumptions and blockers visible early, seek written feedback asynchronously, and use meetings only when they materially accelerate a decision.

Give an example of a developer-productivity improvement you introduced.

I would identify a recurring source of friction using team feedback and delivery data, such as slow tests, unclear local setup, or repetitive release steps. I would implement a measurable improvement, document the new workflow, support adoption, and track whether it reduced cycle time or failures.

How do you balance independent ownership with collaboration across engineering and design?

I take responsibility for moving work forward while involving the right partners early for product, design, and technical input. I communicate decisions and risks transparently, invite challenge on key assumptions, and ensure the final implementation remains aligned with user needs and team standards.
