About this role.
Headway is seeking a fully licensed, ANCC board-certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner to launch or grow an independent private practice on its mental-health platform. The clinician may provide care in person or remotely via telehealth and retains control over caseload and schedule. Headway provides insurance credentialing, billing administration, benefit verification, marketing support, and practice-management tools. Candidates need an NPI number, individual malpractice insurance, and a DEA and/or CDS number or willingness to obtain one. This is a highly autonomous clinical-practice opportunity rather than a conventional salaried staff role.

Sample interview questions
I use a structured, patient-centered assessment covering presenting concerns, psychiatric and medical history, medications, substance use, trauma history, risk factors, mental-status examination, and functional impact. I collaborate with the patient to develop a differential diagnosis and treatment plan, explain options clearly, and document informed consent and follow-up needs.
I assess whether medication is clinically indicated and discuss expected benefits, risks, alternatives, and monitoring requirements. When psychotherapy, primary care coordination, or specialty services would improve outcomes, I make appropriate referrals and coordinate care with consent while ensuring the patient understands the overall plan.
I would complete an immediate, direct risk assessment addressing intent, plan, means, protective factors, and current location. Based on acuity, I would activate emergency procedures, involve local crisis resources or emergency contacts as appropriate, develop a safety plan when clinically suitable, and document all assessment and actions thoroughly.
I verify identity and licensure requirements, review relevant prescription-monitoring data when required, document clinical rationale and informed consent, and follow applicable federal and state rules for prescribing and follow-up. I also use clear boundaries, regular reassessment, and consultation or referral when a case exceeds the safe scope of outpatient management.
I would use the platform’s credentialing, benefits verification, billing, and scheduling support to reduce administrative friction for patients and protect time for clinical care. I would communicate clearly about insurance coverage, telehealth expectations, privacy, treatment goals, and follow-up, while maintaining accurate and timely clinical documentation.
1 in 4 people in the US have a treatable mental health condition, but most providers don’t accept insurance, making therapy too expensive for most people. Headway’s mission is to fix this by building a new mental healthcare system everyone can access. We started by solving the biggest barrier to care: insurance. The admin work – credentialing, claims, payment reconciliation – is a nightmare. We’ve automated that.
But we’re going further. Over 75,000 providers across all 50 states run their practice on our software, serving over 1 million patients. We are building the best tools for therapists to run their entire practice, reimagining the experience of finding a therapist, and investing in the platform foundations to enable this at scale. We aren’t just a billing layer; we are becoming the platform where care actually happens.
We’re a Series D company with $325M+ in funding (a16z, Accel, Spark Capital, etc.), looking for exceptional people to help us achieve this mission. We want your time here to be the most meaningful experience of your career. Join us, and help change mental healthcare for the better.
