About this role.
Oddball is seeking a Cloud Data Architect to own an enterprise-scale, multi-cloud data and analytics architecture supporting VA users and sensitive Veteran data. The role centers on Azure and Azure Databricks, with responsibility for modernization, migration strategy, data modeling, platform engineering, and secure data-product delivery. The architect will establish governance, security, and compliance controls aligned with federal standards including FISMA and NIST 800-53. Success requires strong technical documentation and close collaboration with engineers, analysts, product partners, and government stakeholders in a remote Agile environment.

Sample interview questions
I would use a layered data architecture with controlled ingestion, curated datasets, and governed consumption zones. Security would include least-privilege RBAC, managed identities, encryption in transit and at rest, private networking, centralized secrets management, audit logging, data classification, and fine-grained access controls. I would map these controls to applicable FISMA and NIST 800-53 requirements and validate them through documented evidence and continuous monitoring.
I begin with source-system discovery, data profiling, dependency mapping, and a target-state architecture that defines domains, ownership, quality standards, and integration patterns. I prioritize migrations by mission value, risk, complexity, and data sensitivity, then use incremental delivery with reconciliation controls and parallel validation. I also establish observability, lineage, rollback procedures, and adoption plans so modernization improves both technical reliability and user access.
I treat governance as an enabling platform capability rather than a manual approval process. Standardized data contracts, reusable pipeline templates, automated quality checks, cataloging, lineage, and policy-based access allow teams to work efficiently within clear guardrails. I would define accountable data owners and stewards, publish practical standards, and use measurable service levels for quality, discoverability, and access requests.
I would maintain a set of living artifacts including context and container diagrams, data-flow diagrams, logical and physical data models, integration specifications, security architecture, threat models, control mappings, operational runbooks, and architecture decision records. Documentation would clearly identify data classifications, system boundaries, ownership, interfaces, resiliency patterns, and compliance evidence. I would keep it version-controlled and reviewed as part of the delivery lifecycle.
I would provide governed, role-based access to approved curated data products rather than unmanaged raw extracts. The platform would include reproducible development environments, model registry and deployment controls, experiment tracking, lineage, monitoring, and approval workflows appropriate to model risk. I would ensure training and inference workflows preserve data minimization, auditing, security boundaries, and applicable federal compliance requirements.
