Sample interview questions
I would begin by clarifying session lifetime, consistency, security, peak traffic, and failure-recovery requirements. I would use stateless application instances behind load balancing, store session data in a scalable low-latency datastore where appropriate, and apply expiry controls, caching, monitoring, and rate limits. I would also define resilience measures such as timeouts, retries with backoff, and clear observability for latency, error rates, and session failures.
I would first assess customer impact and use logs, metrics, traces, and recent deployment history to narrow the scope. I would reproduce the issue safely where possible, form and test hypotheses, and communicate findings and mitigation steps with the team. After resolving the root cause, I would add or improve tests, monitoring, documentation, and any preventive safeguards.
A maintainable API has clear resource and error semantics, consistent naming, validation, versioning where needed, and useful documentation. Reliability also requires appropriate authentication and authorization, idempotency for retry-prone operations, sensible timeouts, structured logging, and automated tests for expected and failure cases.
I would measure first, using application metrics and database query analysis to identify whether the bottleneck is query design, indexing, data volume, connection usage, or application behavior. I would then consider targeted indexes, reducing returned fields, pagination, query rewrites, and caching for suitable read-heavy data. I would validate improvements with benchmarks and monitor for regressions after release.
I treat code review feedback as an opportunity to improve both the change and my engineering judgment. I ask clarifying questions when needed, address comments thoughtfully, and look for patterns I can apply in future work. I also aim to give respectful, specific reviews that focus on correctness, maintainability, reliability, and shared team standards.
