D2L is seeking a Software Developer to build technology that advances digital teaching and learning. The role may involve distributed systems, user interfaces, mobile development, and cloud computing. The developer will analyze technical problems, write object-oriented code, and collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and QA professionals. I would first clarify user outcomes, constraints, success metrics, and edge cases with stakeholders. Then I would break the work into components, evaluate design options and trade-offs, define interfaces and data flows, and create an incremental implementation and testing plan.
I would identify responsibilities that were overly coupled, introduce focused abstractions with clear interfaces, and use composition where appropriate. I would validate the design with unit tests and documentation so future changes could be made without affecting unrelated components.
I consider service boundaries, data consistency, failure handling, observability, scalability, security, and idempotency. I also define how the system behaves during partial outages and use monitoring and automated tests to validate critical reliability assumptions.
I involve partners early to clarify requirements and technical constraints, communicate trade-offs in accessible language, and keep decisions documented. During delivery, I share progress, seek feedback on prototypes, and work with QA to define testable acceptance criteria.
I would use AI tools to accelerate research, drafting, and repetitive tasks while independently validating outputs for correctness, security, licensing, and privacy. I would avoid exposing confidential information and ensure engineering judgment remains responsible for final decisions.

We are looking for software developers who have a passion for technology and code. Beyond code, developers are expected to collaborate closely with others including technical product managers, designers and QA. Your ideas and perspectives are essential to making sure we are building the right things.
What you’ll bring to the role:
- Ability to analyze and decompose problems into potential technical solutions
- Experience with OO design and proficient coding skills (ie: C++, C# or Java)
- Strong understanding of Computer Science topics including: data structures, algorithms, databases, distributed systems
- Experience in software development, preferably in a technology focused company
- Acumen with Artificial Intelligence tools
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or similar technical discipline
D2L operates in a hybrid work style, with expectation of 3 days per week in office.

The expected base salary range for a new hire in this role is listed below. The annualized base salary offered is determined by each candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills, education, training and experience. It is aligned to ensure both internal and external competitiveness using market data for the geographic location and industry. As part of the total compensation at D2L the role may be eligible for additional benefits including a Wellness Subsidy, Equity Grants, Variable Incentive, and more.
Base Salary Range
$70,000—$105,000 CAD
