Sample interview questions
How would you evaluate whether a new paid channel is generating incremental subscription growth rather than capturing users who would have converted anyway?

I would define a clear hypothesis and primary incremental outcome, then use a controlled geo, audience, or time-based holdout where feasible. I would compare subscription lift and downstream retention between exposed and control groups, account for seasonality and other marketing activity, and assess results against marginal CAC, LTV, and payback thresholds before scaling.

Describe how you would build a paid subscription acquisition program from scratch for an established freemium product.

I would begin with economics and measurement foundations: subscription conversion, retention, LTV, payback targets, attribution limitations, and instrumentation. Next, I would prioritize channels based on audience fit and testability, launch structured creative and landing-page experiments, and establish a reporting cadence that evaluates incremental subscribers and cohort quality. I would scale only the combinations of channel, creative, and funnel that meet profitable growth thresholds.

How do you optimize campaigns when user-level tracking is limited or unavailable?

I rely on aggregate platform reporting, privacy-safe first-party conversion signals, modeled performance, cohort analysis, and carefully designed experiments. I focus optimization on observable inputs such as creative, geography where appropriate, placement, contextual targeting, and landing-page experience, while validating decisions through lift tests rather than assuming attributed conversions are fully causal.

What metrics would you use to assess the quality of acquired subscription customers?

I would track trial-to-paid conversion where applicable, subscription conversion rate, early churn, retention by cohort, net revenue, LTV, marginal CAC, and payback period. I would also monitor refund or cancellation behavior and compare cohort quality across channels, creatives, and onboarding experiences to ensure growth is durable rather than volume-driven.

Tell us about a time you partnered with Product and Engineering to improve growth performance.

I would explain the business problem, the funnel evidence identifying the opportunity, and the cross-functional experiment I proposed. A strong approach includes agreeing on instrumentation and success criteria, coordinating implementation and launch, reviewing results together, and turning validated learning into a prioritized roadmap of product or funnel improvements.

About You

  • 7+ years of experience in digital advertising roles, with 2+ years of experience in paid acquisition for freemium consumer subscription apps preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience with both strategic planning and execution in digital marketing platforms (app store ads, paid social, mobile app networks) to profitably scale app subscriber growth.

  • Hands-on expertise standing up paid subscription programs from scratch, with a track record of scaling subscriber growth profitably against LTV and payback — not just acquisition costs.
