Sample interview questions
How have you structured a scalable front-end application using React, Next.js, and TypeScript?

I start by defining clear domain boundaries and reusable component patterns, then use TypeScript interfaces and shared utilities to make contracts explicit. In Next.js, I select rendering and data-fetching approaches based on user experience, performance, and content-update needs, while keeping components testable and maintainable.

Describe a time you partnered with designers and strategists early in a project to shape the technical approach.

I joined discovery discussions to understand user goals, interaction complexity, content needs, and delivery constraints. I translated those findings into prototypes and implementation options, explaining tradeoffs in practical terms so the team could choose an approach that protected both the design intent and project timeline.

What steps do you take to ensure a marketing site or digital product meets accessibility and performance standards?

I incorporate semantic HTML, keyboard support, meaningful focus states, and accessible form and media patterns during development rather than treating accessibility as a final checklist. For performance, I monitor bundle size, optimize images and fonts, apply appropriate loading strategies, and validate key pages with browser tooling and real-device testing.

How do you identify and communicate delivery risks on a fast-paced client engagement?

I surface uncertainty early by breaking work into technical assumptions, dependencies, and validation tasks. I communicate the likely impact, available options, and recommendation clearly to project partners, then document decisions and revise the plan before the issue becomes a late-stage blocker.

How would you evaluate whether an AI-assisted development tool should be adopted by an engineering team?

I would test it on representative tasks and assess code quality, security, accuracy, maintainability, and measurable workflow impact. I would also establish review expectations and usage guidelines, ensuring the tool supports engineering judgment rather than replacing design, accessibility, testing, or security practices.

Instrument is a design and technology company. We build brands, products, and experiences that move businesses forward—by making the complex simple.

For over 20 years, we’ve partnered with companies like Google, ServiceNow, Uber, Eventbrite, and ŌURA, helping them navigate change, launch new ideas, and grow with intention.

Our work spans Brand, Marketing, and Product, but what defines us is how we work. We bring strategy, design, and engineering together from the start, moving quickly from idea to execution and refining as we go. We aim to do great work and be great to work with, because both matter.

We’re a collaborative, hands-on team with roots in Portland and New York and a distributed presence across the U.S. and Europe. We build teams around the needs of the work, staying nimble without sacrificing craft.

We value curiosity, perspective, and continuous learning, and we’re committed to building an inclusive environment where people can do their best work.

If that sounds like you, we’d love to meet you.

The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Front-End Developer who enjoys building exceptional digital experiences alongside designers, strategists, and fellow engineers. This isn’t a role for someone who simply executes tickets — we’re looking for a collaborative problem solver who brings ideas, challenges assumptions, and helps shape the products they build.

You’ll work across a wide variety of client engagements, from marketing websites and ecommerce platforms to digital products and emerging experiences. Because our team is lean, you’ll have the opportunity to own meaningful work, contribute to technical direction, and jump into new challenges as projects evolve.

If you enjoy solving complex technical problems, thrive in a collaborative agency environment, and like building products where engineering has a seat at the table, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Do

  • Build modern digital experiences using React, Next.js, TypeScript, and other modern front-end technologies.
  • Partner closely with designers, strategists, and fellow developers from discovery through launch to create thoughtful digital products.
  • Contribute technical ideas early in projects, helping evaluate approaches, tradeoffs, and implementation strategies.
  • Own development work from implementation through delivery while maintaining high standards for performance, accessibility, and quality.
  • Participate in code reviews, share knowledge, and help foster a collaborative engineering culture.
  • Identify risks early, communicate proactively, and help teams solve problems before they become blockers.
  • Explore new technologies and AI-assisted development workflows that improve how we build.

What You’ll Bring

  • Experience building modern web applications with React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
  • Experience delivering digital products, marketing websites, or ecommerce experiences.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced agency or consulting environment.
  • Strong understanding of front-end architecture, component-based development, and responsive design.
  • A collaborative approach to product development—you enjoy partnering with design and strategy, not simply receiving requirements.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical decisions to both technical and non-technical teammates.
  • Curiosity, ownership, and a proactive mindset.
  • Nice to Have:
    • Experience with ecommerce platforms
    • Prototyping experience
    • Personal GitHub or open-source contributions
    • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor or GitHub Copilot
  • Pay Range

    • The expected pay range for this position is $85,000-$105,000. This range reflects the potential compensation across multiple levels and U.S. geographic pay regions. Final compensation is determined by the candidate’s level and their work location. Instrument uses three regional pay ranges to account for cost of living (US1 +15%, US2 +7.5%, US3 Base).
