Sample interview questions
How do you balance people management with maintaining technical credibility as an engineering lead?

I reserve regular time for architecture reviews, design discussions, and understanding the highest-risk areas of the roadmap, rather than trying to be the primary implementer. This lets me ask useful questions, unblock decisions, and support engineers while keeping my main focus on team health, delivery, and development.

Describe how you would handle a consistently underperforming engineer.

I would first establish clear, observable expectations and understand whether the root cause is capability, clarity, motivation, workload, or external constraints. I would provide timely feedback, agree on a documented improvement plan with measurable checkpoints and support, and follow through consistently while treating the person respectfully.

How would you work with Product and QA when a delivery commitment is at risk?

I would surface the risk early, explain the technical and customer impact in clear terms, and bring options rather than only reporting a problem. Options might include narrowing scope, sequencing work differently, investing in quality fixes, or moving a date, with an explicit recommendation based on customer value and risk.

What factors would you consider when evaluating build-versus-buy or technical-debt decisions?

I would assess strategic differentiation, total cost of ownership, security and compliance, integration complexity, delivery speed, operational burden, and the reversibility of the decision. I would ensure the team documents assumptions and chooses an approach that supports both near-term product outcomes and sustainable engineering.

How do you create clarity for a team when priorities are changing?

I translate changing business context into a small set of prioritized outcomes, explain what has changed and why, and make trade-offs visible. I then protect focus by clarifying ownership, sequencing, and what the team should stop or defer, while keeping stakeholders informed of implications.

We’re Capital on Tap 👋
💳 Capital on Tap started because small businesses were underserved. Big banks were slow, their products weren’t fit for purpose, and small business owners often couldn’t access what they needed. We set out to fix that.

Today we’re a financial platform – not just a credit card company. We offer a best-in-class business credit card, SME-focused spend management platform, a savings product that hit £1 billion in funds within its first year, and a growing suite of tools and financial products that make running a small business easier.

1,000+ employees, £20bn in annual card spend, 200,000+ customers, 17,000+ Trustpilot reviews averaging 4.7 stars, and we’re profitable. We’ve done a pretty good job so far, but we’re just getting started!

We opened our first Portuguese office in Porto in autumn 2025, and in less than a year it has grown to a team of 50. Lisbon is the next step. We’re opening our first office in the city and looking for engineers to join as founding members of the team, helping shape how we build, hire and work here from day one.

🏢The role starts out fully remote. Once our Lisbon office is open, it will move to a hybrid set-up of two days a week on site.

Salary: €70,000 – 90,000

What You’ll Be Doing

We’re looking for an Engineering Team Lead to lead one of our product engineering teams here at Capital on Tap.

This is a people-first leadership role. You’ll be responsible for the growth, wellbeing, and performance of a team of engineers, while staying technically credible enough to shape direction, remove blockers, and raise the bar on quality. You won’t be the best coder in the room you’ll be the person who makes the whole room better.

If you’re an experienced Team Lead Engineer looking to own a team in a scaling fintech, this role is built for you.

What You’ll Own

Your team. Hiring, developing, and retaining engineers. Running 1:1s that actually matter. Spotting who’s ready to grow and creating the space for them to do it.

Delivery. Partnering with Product and QA to plan and ship reliably not by micromanaging, but by removing obstacles, managing risk, and keeping the team focused on what matters.

Culture. Setting the tone for how the team communicates, gives feedback, and holds itself accountable. Building psychological safety without sacrificing standards.

Technical credibility. You won’t be heads-down in the codebase every day, but you’ll understand the trade-offs your team is navigating architecture decisions, technical debt, build vs buy and contribute meaningfully to those conversations.

What We’re Looking For

Leadership first. You’ve managed engineers before and have a point of view on what good looks like. You know how to have hard conversations, give developmental feedback, and motivate people.

Technical foundation in .NET. Our backend is C#/.NET Core and you’ll need enough depth to earn trust with your engineers, review decisions, and spot risks. You don’t need to be across every layer of the stack you need to be honest about what you know and curious about what you don’t.

Product mindset. You think about engineering in the context of business outcomes, not just technical correctness. You can push back on scope, advocate for quality, and translate between engineering and non-technical stakeholders.

Comfort with ambiguity. Capital on Tap is growing. Priorities shift. We want someone who creates clarity for their team rather than waiting for it.
