Sample interview questions
I would first instrument the startup path with traces and metrics to isolate time spent in scheduling, isolate initialization, module loading, dependency resolution, and user-code execution. I would then prioritize changes with the largest measured impact, such as isolate pooling where safe, caching compiled modules, reducing initialization work, and improving placement or prewarming strategies, validating each change against latency, memory, and isolation requirements.
The controls need to be measurable, difficult to bypass, and safe for multi-tenant execution. I would use runtime- and host-level limits, account for asynchronous work and child resources, define clear cancellation behavior, and emit structured events when limits are approached or exceeded. The design should balance tenant isolation with predictable developer-facing error messages and minimal overhead.
I would propagate trace context across ingress, routing, runtime execution, outbound requests, database calls, and platform services. Core telemetry would include request latency, cold versus warm starts, CPU and memory usage, errors, throttling, queue depth, and regional health, with carefully designed cardinality controls. Dashboards and alerts should focus on user impact, while sampled traces support investigation of individual slow or failed executions.
I would begin by reproducing the requirement with a minimal test case and understanding the project’s architecture and contribution process. I would propose the design early, explain Supabase’s production use case, implement a focused and well-tested change, and respond constructively to maintainer feedback. If upstream timelines differ from platform needs, I would maintain a minimal compatible workaround while continuing to pursue the upstream solution.
I would identify the production behaviors that are hardest to reproduce locally, including environment variables, routing, permissions, limits, logging, network behavior, and service integrations. Then I would build CLI workflows and DevTools hooks that make those behaviors visible, provide actionable diagnostics, and enable repeatable local tests. The goal is to ensure developers can detect deployment-time issues before release without making the local workflow unnecessarily complex.

Edge Functions are server-side TypeScript functions, distributed globally at the edge – close to your users. Built on top of Supabase Edge Runtime: an open-source, Deno-based runtime written in Rust that runs JavaScript, TypeScript, and WASM services.
We want developers to be able to build truly global applications by distributing both compute and data globally. Infrastructure concerns like regions, cold starts, CPU and memory provisioning should fade into the background so developers can focus on iterating on business logic.

What You’ll Own
Evolving Supabase Edge Runtime – an Open-sourced Rust-based host that runs the Deno isolate, manages the main/user runtime split, and enforces per-request memory and CPU limits.
Implementing monitoring, alerting, and OpenTelemetry tracing across the runtime, then using that visibility to drive optimizations that improve latency and reliability of the service.
Working closely with the Deno and other open-source teams, contributing to upstream and relaying our users’ requirements.
Participating in an on-call rotation to keep Edge Functions healthy in production.
Help manage and improve features like scheduled functions, background tasks, WebSockets streaming, ephemeral file storage, and custom routing.
Integrating functions more tightly with the rest of the Supabase stack – Auth, Postgres, Storage, and Realtime.
Expanding functions to support more use cases (AI inference, MCP servers, hosting simple websites, URL shorteners).
Improving the DX of developing and debugging functions locally through the Supabase CLI, including DevTools integration, logging, and production parity.
What You’ll Bring
At least 5 years of backend or systems engineering experience, with strong fluency in Rust and TypeScript.
Experience with V8 Isolates, Deno and the JavaScript runtimes in general.
Experience operating infrastructure at scale – Kubernetes, AWS, Cloudflare Workers, Redis, or comparable systems.
A strong vision for how compute and data can be pushed to the edge.
Bonus: experience building developer-facing CLIs or front-end tooling that sits on top of an infrastructure product.
