Sample interview questions
I would first contain the issue and collect evidence from failing units, test logs, schematics, and physical inspection. I would isolate the failure through structured measurements and comparison with known-good units, identify the root cause using methods such as fault-tree analysis or 5 Whys, then validate the corrective action across representative units before updating work instructions and test coverage.
I would confirm the test setup and operating modes, characterize the problematic frequencies and emissions paths, then correlate them to likely switching, clock, cable, grounding, or layout sources. I would evaluate mitigations such as filtering, shielding, grounding improvements, cable-routing changes, and firmware or switching-frequency adjustments, followed by repeat scans to verify improvement.
An effective fixture has clear requirements, safe and repeatable connections, adequate instrumentation, robust mechanical alignment, and test coverage tied to critical product risks. It should include unambiguous pass/fail criteria, diagnostics that help technicians isolate failures, calibration and maintenance considerations, and data logging for yield analysis.
I establish a shared view of the problem through yield data, failure Pareto charts, test logs, and samples from affected lots. I work directly with the CM to verify process changes, inspect incoming materials and assembly steps, define containment actions, and track corrective and preventive actions through validation before closing the issue.
I translate the ambiguity into testable hypotheses, prioritize work by safety, production impact, and likelihood, and communicate assumptions and risks early. I maintain concise documentation of observations, experiments, decisions, and next steps so cross-functional teams can quickly contribute and align on a resolution.
