Sample interview questions
I would explain the workload, latency and reliability requirements, the measurements used to locate the bottleneck, and the chosen solution. A strong answer should include trade-offs, such as caching, asynchronous processing, database indexing, or horizontal scaling, plus measurable improvements in throughput, latency, or error rate.
I would begin with load modeling and capacity tests, then protect critical paths through rate limiting, queues, caching, graceful degradation, and observability. I would also define incident ownership, rollback procedures, and clear customer-facing behavior for waiting rooms, inventory consistency, and retries.
I would describe how I scoped a safe incremental release, used automated testing and monitoring, and identified which technical debt needed immediate attention versus follow-up work. The answer should show ownership of both delivery outcomes and long-term maintainability.
I would start with the problem rather than the tool, establish evaluation criteria such as reliability, security, maintainability, team expertise, cost, and integration risk, and run a limited proof of concept. I would document findings, involve relevant stakeholders, and recommend adoption only when benefits justify migration and operational costs.
I use thoughtful code reviews, pairing, clear technical documentation, and context-sharing during planning and incident follow-ups. I tailor support to the teammate's experience level while keeping ownership with them, which builds capability without creating bottlenecks.
