The role, at a glance.
CentralReach is seeking a Principal Platform Engineer to set technical direction for a secure, resilient, and scalable cloud platform serving healthcare and education technology products. The role combines hands-on platform engineering with principal-level architecture leadership across AWS, Kubernetes, GitOps, ArgoCD, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and observability. Key priorities include modernizing legacy infrastructure, improving service reliability through SLOs and incident readiness, and creating self-service tooling that improves developer productivity. The engineer will influence cross-functional architecture decisions, establish durable operational standards, and mentor senior engineers. This is a high-impact remote US role supporting mission-critical systems used by clinicians, educators, and care teams.

Sample interview questions
I would begin with application and dependency mapping, operational-risk assessment, and measurable target architecture principles. I would prioritize incremental modernization using patterns such as strangler migrations, establish automated deployment and rollback controls, and validate each transition with reliability, security, and performance metrics.
I would identify user-critical service journeys, define SLIs that reflect availability, latency, correctness, and operational health, and set pragmatic SLOs with error budgets. I would standardize telemetry, dashboards, alerts, and runbooks so teams can detect issues quickly and use error-budget signals to guide reliability investments.
An effective model uses version-controlled declarative configuration as the source of truth, automated reconciliation through tools such as ArgoCD, and protected pull-request workflows for review and auditability. It should also include environment promotion standards, secrets-management controls, policy enforcement, drift detection, and safe rollback procedures.
I would gather developer feedback and delivery metrics to identify recurring friction, then build paved-road capabilities such as reusable deployment templates, self-service environment provisioning, CI/CD libraries, and standardized observability. The goal is to reduce cognitive load while preserving sensible security and reliability guardrails.
I establish credibility through clear technical reasoning, practical prototypes, and a strong understanding of teams' constraints. I involve stakeholders early, connect standards to measurable business and operational outcomes, create adoption paths rather than mandates alone, and mentor influential engineers who can help scale the change.

- Lead modernization of legacy infrastructure and help guide application developers from legacy software designs toward modern, service-based deployments through collaboration and coordination.
- Establish platform reliability practices, including SLOs, observability, operational readiness, incident response, and continuous KPI improvement.
- Raise delivery standards through safer deployments, stronger security controls, robust data protection, and disciplined asset management.
- Improve developer experience by building effective tooling, feedback loops, and self-service capabilities that significantly increase engineering productivity.
- Mentor engineers and influence architecture, standards, and execution across teams through principal-level technical leadership.
Desired Skills and Experience:
- 10+ years building and operating mission-critical platforms across DevOps, infrastructure, cloud, or software engineering.
- Principal-level architecture judgment across scalability, reliability, security, observability, and operational excellence.
- Advanced AWS expertise across compute, networking, storage, identity, containers, serverless, messaging, data, and observability services.
- Deep hands-on capability with CI/CD, infrastructure as code, Kubernetes, GitOps practices, ArgoCD and associated tooling, deployment automation, source control, and production scripting.
- Comfort contributing to cross-functional architecture forums, shaping future platform investments through strong technical perspectives and collaborative influence.
- Proven ability to mentor senior engineers, set durable standards, and strengthen a high-accountability platform engineering culture.
