The role, at a glance.
This Engineering Manager will lead Gopuff's Catalog and Partner Integrations teams, which own product-data platforms and integrations with marketplaces and retail partners. The role blends hands-on software engineering with people leadership, architecture direction, delivery planning, and operational ownership for distributed applications. Key technical areas include Java, TypeScript, SQL/Postgres, Kubernetes, Terraform, Azure, asynchronous messaging, data-intensive systems, and React-based applications. The manager will work closely with product and engineering leadership to prioritize roadmaps, manage dependencies and risk, and build a high-performing engineering organization. Sample interview questions
I would begin by aligning on measurable business outcomes, such as catalog accuracy, integration uptime, fulfillment success rate, and partner onboarding time. I would assess platform health, customer impact, delivery dependencies, and engineering capacity, then prioritize a balanced roadmap of reliability work, strategic capabilities, and technical-debt reduction. I would communicate tradeoffs explicitly and review priorities regularly with product and engineering leadership.
I would use durable messaging with idempotent consumers, well-defined event schemas, retries with backoff, dead-letter handling, and observability across the full event lifecycle. I would design for ordering and consistency requirements by domain rather than assuming one pattern fits all workflows. Clear replay procedures, reconciliation jobs, and business-level monitoring would help detect and correct data discrepancies.
I focus my hands-on time on high-leverage work such as architecture reviews, complex technical decisions, incident learning, and mentoring rather than becoming a bottleneck for implementation. I set clear ownership boundaries and delegate meaningful technical leadership to senior engineers. Regular one-on-ones, planning rituals, and documented decision-making keep the team supported while preserving time for strategic leadership.
I would establish service ownership, production readiness standards, automated testing expectations, meaningful SLOs, dashboards, alerts, and incident review processes. I would also promote progressive delivery, infrastructure-as-code, runbooks, and regular reliability reviews tied to roadmap planning. The goal is to make quality measurable and operational responsibility routine rather than reactive.
I would first clarify expectations, gather specific examples, and understand whether the issue involves skills, role fit, clarity, workload, or external blockers. I would create a documented improvement plan with concrete outcomes, support resources, regular check-ins, and a defined timeline. I would provide direct, respectful feedback while protecting team standards and recognizing progress fairly.
