The role, at a glance.
Mozilla is hiring a contract Staff Software Engineer to independently maintain Firefox's Layout area, including CSS, page layout, asynchronous panning and zooming, text, and image rendering. The role focuses on resolving bugs and regressions, preserving test health, reviewing code, and handling incoming Layout issues across desktop and Android platforms. The engineer will work at a technical-lead level in a large, mature, multithreaded C++ codebase while collaborating in planning and web-compatibility discussions. Strong C++ expertise, browser or web-platform knowledge, CSS layout depth, and advanced debugging skills are central to success. This is a high-autonomy maintenance and reliability role that enables other engineers to focus on performance and security priorities.

Sample interview questions
I would first create a minimal reproducible test case and identify the affected platform, graphics configuration, and build revision. I would use automated tests, logging, platform-specific debugging tools, and bisection to isolate the responsible change, then validate the fix across relevant desktop or Android configurations to prevent a platform-specific workaround from introducing a broader regression.
I begin by identifying shared state, ownership boundaries, and synchronization assumptions. I use sanitizers, tracing, deterministic reproduction techniques where possible, and focused instrumentation to establish ordering and lifetime behavior. I then implement the smallest safe synchronization or ownership correction and add regression coverage that exercises the problematic concurrency path.
Important concepts include the cascade, formatting contexts, box-model calculations, intrinsic sizing, flexbox, grid, fragmentation, positioning, overflow, painting order, and writing modes. At the engine level, I would also consider invalidation, layout-tree structure, reflow performance, and conformance with relevant web specifications and compatibility expectations.
I prioritize user-impacting regressions and correctness issues, but I avoid narrowly patching symptoms when the root cause is clear. For each fix, I add or improve automated coverage, document important technical tradeoffs in review, and identify recurring problem areas that should be scheduled for cleanup or architectural follow-up.
I would use them to accelerate exploration, generate hypotheses, summarize unfamiliar code paths, and draft test ideas, while independently validating all outputs against source code, specifications, tests, and reviewer feedback. I would not rely on generated suggestions for correctness in security-sensitive, concurrent, or standards-critical changes without rigorous verification.
